A loophole for mobility impaired people is so needed. For someone with early arthritis or chronic fatigue an e-bike with throttle is a lifesaver.

Only in England would there be a system requiring individual bikes to be approved, instead of a representative example. What a nonsense.

To be fair it's not an achievement to have made this bike legal. It's a problem that this is illegal in the first place.

So many people cycling around illegally, do the police ever check?
I was in Leicester during the week and the city centre is plagued with fast food delivery guys speeding around on electric bikes, very few are using pedals and no way they are restricted to 15.5 mph.

It's not a loophole. It just proves a specific ebike meets the criteria set out by the standard. There's nothing to stop anyone else putting their existing throttle ebike through an SVA test. All the information is available. Even a more powerful ebike can be put through an SVA test and ridden as a moped, scooter or motorcycle. It's all possible and could work out cheaper than buying and electric moped or scooter from the outset. People build their own cars and motorcycles, so why not?

As you just demonstrated, no loophole is needed, because Dibble doesn't give a stuff. If you want extra security, wear a puffa jacket with a DeliverEats bag on your back, don't have any lights and ride with your mobile phone in your hand. Then you can blast your 750W Allegro electric motorcycle at 30mph on pavements without anyone blinking twice. There's no point in being legal when criminality is never sanctioned.

I'm an old guy, getting rolling before I have both feet on the pedals is key, before wobbling and falling off, LOL.

Wisper eBikes already do this with their Full Throttle option. They get every eBike individually type approved with the DVLA so you can use the throttle up to 15.5 mph without pedalling. It costs about £300 extra.

I've got MS, and this could be great to get me back outdoors, where a traditional pedal bike is too much for my leg weakness.

The best part about a throttle on these little ebikes is that at a complete stop at an intersection is that it gets you OUT of the way of cars at the intersection. The cars are not waiting for the rider getting frustrated waiting for "that damn bike", We zip into the bike lane in better control, out of the way, no wobble. You know how rider and bikes wobble at the start? Which aggravates the car driver... I bet you do a study proving that the throttle, going up to 15-18mph in a smooth fashion may actually change the law? Its safer for sure. Cheers.

Got my Cruiza last week, it's great for commuting, the throttle comes into it's own after a long day at work, i was lucky and mark had my bike already approved, only took a few days to arrive in scotland. great bikes, great company.

My electric bike has a twist throttle and was built in the 80s would you believe. It was a prototype designed for towing stuff round an airport. It's got modern batteries and can go about 15 mph.

The issue with this is, the government is currently considering the legality of using the throttle for use above the 3.7mph ish max speed and raising the speed limit above the current 15.5mph but if they are going to make money from individuals or company applying for the legality of these then they won’t change anything.

With no seat height adjustment, it needs to be throttle controlled.
It would like pedalling a bmx bike only 5 times heavier if the battery ran out.
But its a pretty cool looking piece of transport.

All E-bikes, that were made before 1st Jan. 2016. that has a throttle control, are legal. I used to own a 2015 Oxygen Hybrid E-Bike, with the l throttle. The engine cut out at 15.5mph. 😊

My MiRider with 250w motor and throttle requires no effort but pedals do need to turn for throttle to work up to 15.5mph. Great mode of transport 👍

General requirements - EAPC classification
The EAPC regulations[footnote 1] as amended[footnote 2] set out the requirements that EAPCs must satisfy if they are not to be treated as motor vehicles when used on roads in GB - i.e. do not need to be licensed and registered etc. The requirements are the:

cycle must be fitted with pedals that are capable of propelling it.
maximum continuous rated power of the electric motor must not exceed 250 Watts.
electrical assistance must cut-off when the vehicle reaches 15.5 mph
(Note: the previous limit on motor power for bicycles and the restrictions on weight, and the number of wheels an EAPC may have, were removed on 6 April 2015).

An EAPC which complies with the above is not considered to be a motor vehicle within the meaning of the ‘Road traffic regulation act 1984’ and the ‘Road traffic act 1988’. As a result, it is not required to be registered or subject to vehicle excise duty (road tax), and does not have to be insured as a motor vehicle. However, EAPCs must not be ridden by anyone under the age of 14 years[footnote 3].

Power assistance - “Twist and Go”
Because of the particular benefits for elderly and disabled users, pedal cycles providing electrical assistance without use of the pedals - usually called “Twist and Goes” - are included in the above GB classification provided they are capable of pedal operation and comply with the above restrictions on maximum motor power and assistance cut-off speed.

However, under European law[footnote 4] new “Twist and Go” vehicles will, from January 2016, have to meet a range of technical requirements before they can be used on roads.

This will normally be established by “type approval” at the manufacturing stage but importers and individuals will be able to seek an individual approval for vehicles that have not been type approved.

Mine goes 33 mph. Police have seen me loads over the last 2 years and no problems. I got stopped on my electric skateboard but that was advice about visibility for car drivers to see me.
The bikes great only 900!
