That is not Mike Vining. It is Bill Cronin, and he was an early member of Delta. He and Mel Wick own a defense contracting company called QSL. Over dinner, one night Bill told me the whole story behind that picture and how all the other operators called him “Hollywood” because it was so well known. I later showed him the picture of Steve Forsing From the movie and told him “ This character is based on you!” He seemed to get a real kick out of that

Sergeant Major Mike Vining has denied that this photo with the white shirt and M4 was of him in a recent podcast. He says that the guy in the photo was a friend of his (who's name I can't recall right now). He indicated a great deal of respect for his friend and said that he was actually off working on another op at the time that this photo was taken. Vining is a hero and likely one of the most capable men to ever have lived. I have no doubt that his friend in the initial photo was very much like him.
