How To Wire a 4 or 5 Pin Relay With a Negative Trigger Wire.

In this video, I explain why it is necessary to use a relay in a circuit. I then demonstrate how to wire a 5 pin relay with a negative trigger wire. The benefits of using a negative trigger wire on a 5 pin relay would be - one less power wire going to the relay, and not needing a power wire feeding your switch. This may be beneficial depending on what type of accessories you are wiring into your car or truck. You could use this method for a radiator fan, fuel pump, headlights fog lights, spot lights, LED lights and probably hundreds of other uses.

How to wire a relay with a negative switch
00:00 Why use a relay instead of a switch?
1:00 Pin 30 + Pin 86 - Connect them both together to a fused 12V power source.
1:31 Pin 87 - Sends power out to your accessory.
1:59 Pin 85 - Connect to the switch, with the other side of the switch going to ground.

Pin 30 - Incoming 12v to the relay from the battery (fused)
Pin 86 - incoming 12v to the relay from the battery (fused) - Tied in with Pin 30
Pin 87 - Outgoing power from the relay to the electric accessory (lights, pump, fans, etc)
Pin 85 - Negative trigger wire to turn on the relay. Should be connected to a switch. The other side of the switch should connect to a ground.
Pin 87a - Empty

I love how you have all your wires attached to a piece of cardboard like a science fair demonstration lol. Very helpful!!!

Used this type for circuit for electric fans on an old hot rod back in the 90s.
Used a coolant temp thermo switch from some euro car as the ground switch, with a backup manual switch wired in as well.
Worked great.

Thanks for posting this video. It refreshed my mind. Building a rc mower and would be using a remote switch to trigger this relay and that in turn will trip a high amp relay for the motor controller so I can cut power via the transmitter so if there's a problem the mower will shut down and not going on a rampage.

This seems like the only video that shows what to do with the 86 wire. Every other video I’ve watched I’ve watched many of them they skip this step. Thank you sir.

This is very useful Datsun 240Z have a negative trigger head light and turn signal switch, this is very useful.
I have found every wiring tutorial you have done very useful so thank you.
It's very very very possible to over think wired circuits . This series has broken down all the systems to useful Chunk's system by system.
Can you show how to wire a viper alarm to a Classic car since they don't come with instructions in english

You do a very good job explaining things. Much props given, I can build cars but I can't make a good YouTube video. Lol. You should do one on how brake lights work and still let a blinker "blink"

Now I get it. A relay is like a strong guy helping a kid (the manual switch) carry out heavy load.

Thanks, I was able to do this and have two different power sources controlling my acc.switches.

Great vids, they've helped in building my fuse and relay panel. There's still something I'm not understanding or I'm not sure if it can be done. I want to use a 5 pin momentary switch, which I believe has led, to have switched ground for a 5 pin relay. Is it possible to use a 5 pin switch for ground and still have the led turn on?? Led will be on only when vehicle lights are turned on. Thankyou!!
