The A/M series is something to be reread every ten years or so. I'm about do for a third time. What sets this series apart from so many other naval sagas is that while the sea battles are great, O'Brian creates one of the most poignant friendships in literature. Jack and Steven's relationship as tested by peace and war, love and rivalry, riches and poverty, sickness and health truly shows us the human condition and what it means to have a best friend.

I picked up "Moll Flanders", "Wuthering Heights", "Wild Swans" and "Lab Girl" yesterday. Used bookstores are wonderful.

Though we don't have Thanksgiving
we are having here in Germany
a November Pause
restaurants, cafes, gyms
all theatres, opera houses, cinemas
and in that section was included brothels
(which are legal)
have been closed for the month of November
We got a second refund for tickets to see
quite a few things - and what will happen about
the Christmas Markets - which every German town now have
But I don't expect Glühwein will be supped as often.

Yay, Helen MacInnes. As a teenager, I used to seek out her espionage novels in the library. They were all about 20+ years old by the time I came across them.

Fun and varied book haul! So jealous that you have somewhere you can at shop for books outdoors! Here in CA we are bracing ourselves for another lockdown soon, we hear rumblings that it’s coming. I commend you for being a thoughtful human and sacrificing your thanksgiving travel plans, the holidays are going to make these decisions so much harder but we all definitely need to consider what impact our choices will have on our family and friends. Hope you can still have a nice quarantine Thanksgiving at home, and enjoy it in whatever ways you can!

Alexander Waugh (grandson of Evelyn) who espouses the idea that William Shakespeare was a pseudonym for The 8th Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere ...thus not supporting the Mr Bacon 🥓 theory

Titan Books is UK based but has US distribution via Penguin Random House so their books are easily acquired this side of the pond. Titan have reprinted all of Helen MacInnes' spy novels and they are on my Wanty List for sure.

Over the past few years, my wife and I have gone to a meal at our church for the holiday. We had large crowds and people who were alone would come and joined a wonderful opportunity to just have a great meal and play games, no religion involved. This year its not happening and Sherry and I will be having a small meal for us. Really a very sad holiday.
