The disability rep in this book is laughably bad and unrealistic. Putting aside that the disability seems to just disappear as the narrative drags on (I guess because Rebecca thought it was too difficult to write a disability she herself has in real life), the actual limitations of her disability when it DOES come up are suspension breaking. You cannot pull the smol but fast trope with someone who has EDS because speed doesn't just come from a lack of mass. If that were true then I could argue a god damn penny is fast. You have to actually have developed muscles to propel you and the problem here is that, even if those muscles were developed (which, given Violet's backstory and condition, we have no reason to assume they are), the strain they put on her joints would not only cause immense pain for Violet and cause her to trip, fall, and be paralyzed if she ever attempted to go Sanic speed. This is a pity because the disability rep in this book certainly had the POTENTIAL to be good. It had the potential to balance out the rest of the Mary Sue wish fulfillment and still keep Violet a character with actual limitations.

I started listening to the audiobook yesterday ironically but it's actually pretty good! Like, I giggle all the time bc of 'bad' writing but it's still enjoyable, go try it out!!

this is quite possibly my favorite review! I'm fucking obsessed with this, and yes, the chokehold is so real. Love the incredible rep. There are bi characters, sex is not taboo in the slightest, nearly all the characters are like, yeah I can sign, so what? and ahhh!!!! Love love love

I started reading it because someone on tiktok said it's good, but it's sooo fucking boring. I just don't get the hype. There is dragons, but it feels like they are just hanging out and saying akward somewhat edgy shit. Also there is so much random worldbuilding at the start that we really don't need to know yet and don't care about. Also why is every man described as attractive? Like half the descricption is that he was hot.

I think the book itself was really good and interesting to me. I loved it but I just think the writing could use a bit more work and editing. The relationship buildup just kind of jumped out of nowhere then they were like confessing their love but I still think this book is great. I loved the story and the world with the dragons. I would read this over and over again. Ik this book has been criticized a lot but I think it’s pretty good. The last battle scene and death really kept me on edge and the last chapter, too. I preordered Iron Flame and I am very excited. I just hope the character build up is better.

As someone with EDS (the same disorder as Violet and the author) its really incredible to see it repped and HOW its repped in the book. We call ourselves zebras because of how well we blend in with "normal" people but internally have to deal with a plethora of medical issues and the constant physical and mental battle to keep your body together, exactly like Violet. Its so nice to see her acknowledged as the badass she is for the work she puts in.

Excuse me but this book is fcking shite. It has actually no story, there is NO enemies to lovers trope (Xaden hasn't been her enemy to begin with, Violet was just delusional), no character development, bad writing and bad research (BOW staff?? How did the editors even miss this?) and books like this will ruin the actual fantasy genre.

The disability was never mentioned on screen and only brought up by RY after the fact, she’s just portrayed as weak and delicate throughout the book, there’s a few queer side characters that all feel very weakly written and there queerness is only mentioned to show how progressive the author is, it’s board line tokenized. Overall the book is. 4/10
