The #1 factor in getting the highest price possible for whatever you’re selling is having good pictures! It’s the very first thing a potential buyer sees, and if there aren’t enough detailed pictures available, or the pictures themselves are poor quality, your item simply won’t achieve it’s highest potential value.

This quick master class video is all about tips on what types of gear to use, and how to take pictures of products for sale on online marketplaces like eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, and many more. I’ve been a reseller for over 18 years and have over 13,000 feedback on eBay, and have fine tuned a setup that works great for me. Hopefully a similar setup will help you create stunning product photos too!

I will go through how to stage products for photography, setup lighting, as well as detail how to get the best possible photos through using:
1.) Your Smart Phone
2.) Point & Shoot or Bridge Digital Camera
3.) DSLR or Mirrorless Camera.
You can get great product photography through each, and if your funds allow, utilizing a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera is the best way to get the most premium looking and detailed photos that will wow potential buyers.

My recommended professional shooting setup is:

Lighting is an absolutely critical component of good product photography. I use the below lighting setup to brighten up my space and create the most natural and lifelike photos:

This video details tips and tricks on improving your photography of any product that you want to sell, new, used, large, small, it doesn't matter. I also take product photography (since 2011) especially for the big stock photo agencies like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock and others. I am surprised of how many photos are sold there. at first i could not afford big lights but i solved the problem by placing the camera on a tripod, set the ISO to 100 and low aperture for long exposures. Results: crisp images of anything!
I appreciate the quality of your recent videos on YouTube, i can see the progress. the dedication, the work... this "show, don't tell" technique works very good for retention, views, etc. Congrats! 👍

This video is indeed spot on with the analysis. I was a photographer back in the day of film and Kodachrome.

I tried the light box. I didn’t like it. Too much time with getting the right shot and angles.
I tried the iphone. I didn’t like it. It did not feel right as a camera to me.
Today I use a bridge camera. The Panasonic FZ80D. The zoom and macro features are amazing and allow me to do what needs to be done without editing. Before the Panasonic I also used a bridge camera.

I have a high standing pub table with a top that rotates. Huge time saver and back saver.
My overhead light is a 4 foot daylight led work light. I also have a ring light.
I list from the desk top. It too is faster and at this volume it is easier to use. Remember, I’m old.

If I was just going to sell a few items per week then I would stick with the iphone.
But when you list 20 items a day the camera makes much more sense as a time saving tool. You have to actually do it to believe it.

Great video!

I used to sell on eBay. Correct test it test it. I used a pool table and had a brick back ground to a tan wall. Just switch side of the pool table and back ground changed. But I guess whatever you have to balance colors to lighting. It only matters if you just don’t like it simply because you can crop and change or tweak the picture. I used to use so many things to make the picture pop.

I love that grainy wood, I am often conflicted by using that type of background or pure white.

The biggest problem I have is vertical banding from LED lights. How do you avoid/adjust for this problem?

You only need a phone with a camera, using a digital camera is such a waste of time
