I Own The Most Unreliable BMW - Some Of The Issues And How To Take Care Of the E60 M5

I own what Doug DeMuro and Hoovies Garage call the most unreliable BMW. I own the BMW E60 M5, and there are issues with the car. Don't get me wrong, it can be unreliable. However, there are ways to take care of the car and ways to mitigate some of these issues.

My father owned a series of M cars through the years.
He maintained them by the book and although he drove them hard he never abused them.
Always warmed them up thoroughly and religiously checked fluid levels and tire pressures.
All have lasted between 190 to 225 k miles with few problems.
Never left him stranded either.

I like the feedbacks from your mechanic, warm up and routine oil changes are huge necessities to bmw engines.

No matter what this car is a legend...best v10 sound ever in my opinion I once saw one in the dyno and they had to chain it like a Monster

mark.. i respect what you do.. you are pretty logical and argumentative. Usually, north americans are ignorant... i love my e60 m5 and i can say thay if you take good care of it you got a reliable car...

The warmup procedures are important on any race car engine even on the JDM racecars like the GTR with it's RB inline six engines. Or even an American V8 like the Corvette LS/LT because the high viscosity take forever from the amounts of pressure from the cold temperatures and ingredients like sulfur. Your mechanic has great knowledge like my friend who takes care of my E46...

finally someone that is able to say “ yea things fuck up, but don’t let them “ if you really love the car like i do . do your research, take the precautions and hope for the best . bumps will come

I don't care what Doug says. I bought an E63 M6. The driving experience can't be replicated for what I paid. Ultimately you are getting near supercar performance. What you have to decide is if the cost to maintain these properly is worth the driving experience to you. For me, at this moment, it is.

The thing with Hoovie is that failing is his shtick, he knows enough to get in trouble and its entertaining enough for him to afford to make those mistakes; despite his best efforts to mitigate issues. Everyone hopes he succeeds, but it usually doesn't happen, so he gets in over his head on cars just to keep the show on the road.

Whereas you have an engineer's mind and understand the issues, people who truly want an E60 M5 will find your video, weigh your extensive knowledge and make an informed decision. Keep up the great work.

Essentially it is a racing engine and needs to be treated like a racing engine warm up everyday before use is essential and routine servicing regularly you check

You got great mechanic.. I also go by 4-5k kms intervals with 0w40 and always proper warm up before I take off.

I still use LiquiMoly 10w60 but agree that the warm up is critical! 8 years with my M5 the only issue I’ve had was the throttle actuators just after purchase. 116, 000+ miles will look at replacing the rod bearing next spring as a precaution to put my mind at rest.

Drives me mad - BMW put a 500bhp race engine in a 4 door sedan and everyone thinks they can beat it like a daily driver. It needs an informed owner - it's a car peoples car.

I’ve owned mine for 3 years and my advice is ... warm the car up gently by that I mean drive it below 3k revs for ten mins that’s all you need to do plus have the oil sampled every couple of years for signs of wear and tear regarding metals ( rod bearings ) always keep the oil topped up and try and use shell V power petrol that’s all I use .. I was told this by the previous owner that treated this car like a baby 😎👍👌🇬🇧
Forgot to mention my car has been very reliable she’s a Beauty

You make sense . infact current new cars after sometime will break down so bad that people will throw them away since they are not long lasting . Secondly people drive this M5 like crazy as if theres no tomm . If you keep it with care and dont drive it like maniac all the time, it could last for decent amount of time .. All depends on how you drive your car .

11:00 that's one of 10 good reasons and example great point and take away that's something not to do with M engines and cars in general it kills me when I see my neighbor drive his AMG and drives away within 5 seconds and it's just terrible

No use 5w-50. That’s what me and Troy Jeup run in our stroker v10s

This is my favorite car, but never owned one, I had 525d e60, 530d, 535d, 545i, best looking car ever!
When Mercedes Benz made E 55 AMG back in 2003, they said "it will be long time for someone to catch performance of this saloon" then BMW step in, put F1 engine in their saloon ^^

BMW recommends to not sit there and let the engine warm up but to drive easy for a while to get it moving and warming. I have twin turbos and at 126k miles have used 0-40 weight every 7-10k miles. And I NEVER punch it until that oil gauge comes off that 160 mark. Car still drives like when I bought it. No leaks, no ticking, no new vanos solenoida. But yet, I see the M3, 4, and 5 owners hammering the throttle in the parking lot right at start up sending shivers up my spine.

Got it. I will warm up my 335i before racing off to work in the freezing morning. I want to make it last. Going for MODs next and a M3 next time.
