In most workshops space is limited. So you need to find a way to utilize every bit of space that you can. One area that is often overlooked is the space underneath shelves and cabinets. But this can actually be a great place to store small tools. All you need is a few magnets and some sheet metal.

In this project, I show you how to make simple magnetic mounting brackets that you can use to hang small metal hand tools such as screw drivers and pliers. You can small brackets with a single magnet or you can make long mounting strips with multiple magnets. Hanging your tool keeps them easily accessible and frees up some of your valuable horizontal space.

To be cheap, could you countersink two holes in the magnet and do it that way?

Good idea, I think I'll try it out. I might even cover a portion of my garage wall with sheet metal with magnets behind. I might get lazy and just glue the magnets under the shelves tho..

Great idea.... Harbor Freight has those long tool racks magnets on sale often.   I ran out of wall space, so this solves a problem I have with a left over magnet bar I have.

Nice idea, but wouldn't it be easier to just glue the magnet to the bottom of the shelf?

What if u just glue the magnet onto the wood? Hot glue? Epoxy?

You'll need a decent neodymium magnet for this to be practical. A ceramic magnet will not hold much.

I think I prefer the metallic filings sticking to my screwdriver rather than accidentally ending up shorting something out ;)

drilling a magnet.. doesn't that activate the space time continuum?

That is not safe...you are hanging it by the tool's tip...it can fall off easily

Or simply buy a magnetic kitchen knife holder that got a really strong magnet and got the same area as 10 of those magnets

i want my pliers and screwdrivers to be magnetic, every time i try to hold a small screw with pliers or want to drive in a screw, its so frustrating that you have to allign the heads all the time. so in this case it doesnt matter.

you can demagnetize them if you have gun soldering tool
