Why does everyone have to read To Kill a Mockingbird? 🤔

Fun fact, my boyfriend’s sister has Tourette’s and after reading this book in high school one of her new ticks was telling the N word loudly. Anywhere, even in public. My boyfriend said it was the hardest time for the entire family (his whole family is white but his sister was adopted from China so imagine a white family with a little Asian girl and she’s just yelling the N word in the middle of the grocery store) it was not easy. And they blame it purely on that book because she had been taught that word previously in a list of “offensive words that you should never say” and she didn’t get that tick until it was read to her in HS. That book is wrong for so many reasons. And I don’t believe in banning books at all. But it shouldn’t be taught so easily in school.

If you're asking you're self why you had to read to kill a mockingbird. You didn't understand it.

I misspoke yall, there aren’t a million other books with the same message. I just think that leaving the word in and using that book specifically so widespread was a bit of an oversight IMO

I weep for the younger generation as an ex teacher. The book has a lesson on morality and the way society was and still is. The n-word is there because its a realistic depiction and because censorship in all forms is bad, even if its"offensive" to your people.

Most schools offer a way to opt out of reading it, and while reading the book you shouldn't focus on the language they used, but the theme and whole point they make us read it. Try to learn from the mistakes of those who lived before us to make a better tomorrow!

Cause it was a cool book that showed that racism was bad. Talking about racism in real terms & real examples of the time, like using the n word, helps teach people what it is and how to recognize it.

I haven't read it, but i have seen that case. The problem isn't so much the book than it is the act of restricting literature. The answer lies in history as most regiemes we typically deem as bad in modern history started that way. Amongst other germany have a monument depicting shelves with numbered slots. The point of this installment is that there was a book burning event in 1933, and each book have a spesific spot in those empty slots.

The reason behind the hunger games books was so the younger age wasn't ok with war and death

It is well known, and it makes people uncomfortable. It makes it way, way easier to start conversations about uncomfortable topics than to use a book that say only 1-2 % of the population has heard of. Is it the very best book for the task? Maybe not. But due to the role it has had in society over a long time, it is near impossible to replace. And well... I would say that 80-90% of the people I see complaining about it is as pasty white as myself.

Maybe "To Kill A Mockingbird" represents evidence that a book can be great without being edited for people's sensibilities? BUT, I can see yo point. There are lots of great tunes out there without the "n" word in them. Did you think of that?

I didn't have to read it. I chose to read it.
Also, why does that word offend you...?

You need to read it to under stand why you getting upset about a book just because it has the n word is wrong. You read it for the moral of the story, did you miss that?
