When I was an exchange student in Japan, the most shocking thing I saw was that they shared the bath water with family. From elder to young, go into the tub and warm up their body and NOT drain out the water, but leave it as it is for the next family member.

They say they take a quick shower before going into the tub, but I still see the dead skin and pubic hairs floating on tubs, so I managed to take a shower until the end of my stay.

I do respect their culture, but that one thing I just couldn't adopt.

I love how bathrooms are designed in Japan. Everything tiles and the drain on the floor! You can easily clean very quickly. ❤

i wash the tub before i get in and right before i get out of the shower after rinsing off from the bath. I'm absolutely obsessed with it being totally clean before i soak in it, I'm with them on this one

I really enjoy your “snapshots of ordinary Japanese life. They are a window on Japanese culture from a different aspect. And the producer, director, and narrator comes through the screen as a REALY nice guy. I have especially enjoyed watching his son grow from an infant to a 2 year old.

I clean mine down after its been used and then once a week deep clean. Honestly never thought of washing it before i get in.

I was always taught to clean the bath when you get out so that it is ready for the next person to use. Are they saying that they leave it dirty until the next time or that they do both? Both seems excessive.

I lived in a Western monastery for a little while, and all the sisters (who were able-bodied and could do so) were instructed to wash the shower each day after using it. Since there were upwards of a dozen people who'd be using the showers and we had no cleaning staff besides the sisters themselves, that helped keep everything nice and tidy!

I’m African. Where I’m from it’s mandatory to wash the shower, bathtub and or bucket you used after bathing. Like I was so shocked when I went to uni in Europe and saw that it isn’t normal for most people. What a shock. I just thought it’s simple and straightforward. Even after brushing your teeth, you clean the sick basin. I’m so shocked with how dirty some other people are

I’m from the US and I was taught to clean the tub before you get in it/prepare it for someone else with a gentle cleaner like liquid Lysol or Fabuloso, and clean the shower and tub monthly with bleach to prevent mold

I always wash the tub out too. Dust can settle in the tub in between uses and I don’t want that floating in my water while I’m soaking lol. I also shower before I get in the tub so the soaking water will be clean too.

I love how important cleanliness is in Japanese culture because I can relate to it. Although I am English, I clean the basin every time I use it, the toilet before showering and the shower when I’m in it.

American here. I was raised to wash bath after each use/person. Is the problem with him not washing after he showers knowing others will come behind them? If so, then I totally agree with her. Lol

This is simply a perception of cleanliness. Humans in general have so many of these superstitions in their lives. My wife covers all of our in-use cups with lids because she doesn't want to "drink" dust... I keep telling her she is breathing it in all day!

My mom made us clean the tub after use, so it was ready for the next one. I have 3 sisters so we all followed the rule.😊

I always wash my tub before I soak but i don't do soak very often. Especially since we have the shower/tub combo like in most U.S. homes.
