About Back to Bataan (Theatrical Release - May 31, 1945)
John Wayne stars as the leader of a determined band of resistance fighters combating the Japanese in the Philippines until the American Army returns to battle triumphantly in Back to Bataan.

When the American Army evacuates the Philippines after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Colonel Joseph Madden (Wayne) stays behind to organize an underground resistance. With the help of Philippine Army Captain Andres Bonifacio (Academy Award winner Anthony Quinn), the small, determined band of warriors becomes the tip of the military spear that stops the Imperial Japanese Army from advancing across Asia and the Pacific.

The unmistakable lighting and cinematography of Nicholas Musaraca. Look at the framing of each shot.

6:01 is an insanly effective stunt. Though now i can see the wires, on my old TCM dvd, I could not due to the lower resolution. Im still impressed by it. They didnt speed the camera at all, that was actually John Wayne being thrown up and down that fast. Impressive work. Good filmmaking.

I read some years ago that, if I remember correctly, the battle of Bataan was the first US battle of WWII and the last battle of WWI, referring to the fact that the defenders were relying on equipment used in WWI.

Every time I see Wayne in a movie i'm surprised by how natural he is on screen. Seems like a modern actor. Ironically, in those days he was criticized for being too one-dimensional. His performance here...and as Ethan Edwards in The Searchers, and Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.. prove otherwise.

I once read an autobiography called Last man off Corigedor . He said someone had found a few bottles of Coke. I believe that they normally sold for five cents. They were sold for several dollars each. People had money, but little of any value to spend it on.

Was that Yakima Canutt doing a version of the dynamite chair stunt 06:01 taking a charge in the chestplate? Wow!

My paternal great uncle was missing in action during the battle of Bataan while serving under the American flag. My late father said he was a Philippine Scout.

11:21, funny how it's mentioned he leaves by PT Boat. John Wayne was a "PT Boat Commander" in the movie 'They Were Expendable'.

Is this where all the people who didn't serve in the military criticize John Wayne for not serving in the military?

My Grandfather in my Father's side was a Philippine Scout soldier, was part of the Bataan Death March up to Camp O'Donnel in Capas Tarlac where he died 3 days before liberation.

My great grandfather was an officer with the Filipino guerillas/OSS. He survived the death march too. I only have one picture of him holding me as a baby in his arms, his eyes beaming wearing some large lenses. It didn’t look it in the picture but I was being held in the arms of a once cold hard nippon killer

A four year supply of food, medical, fuel and ammunition was left in Manila and Fort Stotsenburg warehouses. President Quezon was concerned about the Philippine population. The Japanese simply confiscated the lot.
