Actually, the lead bobber is a lifesaver in my humble opinion. Stopping the blasted bobber from bouncing on the bottom has kept MANY hard and legendary fish from escaping me. I can't hardly stand fishing without it!

you forgot to mention: if you let your fishing bar drop down, but press at the exact time it hits the bottom, it will not bounce up. which makes the lead bobber even more useless.

Best way to level up your fishing fast is to fish on the beach until you're lvl 5. The fish are quite terrible but because of that you can almost catch perfectly everytime thus doubling the xp you get.

After finding out in the wiki that in terms of fishing mechanics; Fishing from the shore and from the pier is no different.
I start fishing at the shore in front of Elliott's Cabin. (And the far east shore for the legendary fish) instead.
Really saved a lot of walking time.

Specifics for fishing XP: Each quality level of fish increases the XP by 3 points—normal is 3pts, silver is 6, gold is 9, and iridium is 12.

Fish each have a difficulty level. That number is divided by 30 and added to the previous number; fish average in the vicinity of 15-20xp.

Catching a treasure chest increases total XP by 2.2; a Perfect catch increases it by 2.4. Oddly, a Perfect catch increases the quality of the fish by one stage, but that increase is not used in the XP calculation.

lead bobber is useless because you can do a quick tap on the reel just before the fishing bar hits the bottom which, if timed right, stops the bar from bouncing even without the tackle
