I think it is easy to be self-reliant when we have experienced pain, betrayal, abandonment etc. We foolishly believe that being hyper independent will protect us and will be more safe. But this is a lie.

We are designed to receive from God and to rely on God ❤

We are NOT created for solo striving, we are created for constant encounter with Jesus!

Exactly what I needed today! This is something that I am really struggling with as a divorced woman, who did not expect to be alone after retirement. I have recently returned to the church after being gone for about 45 years, and am struggling to fully trust God with all of my needs.

I saw a documentary this pat week on George Washington. I did not know how much he turned to God and prayed. He had his soldiers pray with him for God's guidance and attributed every victory to God's grace. So essentially, those miraculous victories against tyranny were due to diligent prayer and turning to God for guidance and grace.

In the modern world the operative myth that animates so much of people's perspective is the idea that self-reliance is among the highest of virtues. This is completely inimical to the way God views ones spiritual development. Throughout the Bible, it is when someone is at their lowest point, broken and helpless, that he guides them to be victorious. It is through that crucible, where self-reliance has failed and that individual acknowledges that they need to rely on something higher than themselves, that they realize their fullest potential. Thank you, Sr. Mary, for articulating this truth so beautifully.

Thank you, Sister Mary Grace. I am one who built my “house” on the sand of independence, not trusting, afraid of needing anyone or anything. Shamed, even before God of my poverty of ability. I woke just before midnight, that gaping hole pounding in my chest and found your video. I have put it on loop, to absorbed every level of this message into my heart (if my brain won’t allow the truth, then my heart will!) Lately I have been doing what you described Juan Diego as doing to Mother Mary, I have been avoiding Jesus, as if I could put His invitation on hold; afraid I will lose control, be overcome, overwhelmed, even though in Holy Communion lately I have felt: “I in you, Jesus, You in me…” as I absorb the Eucharist.
