Pouring Concrete For Our Front Porch

I just poured this small front porch on the new house we’re building, and I decided to pour it myself.
As a general contractor I usually sub out all my concrete flat work- especially something big like a basement or a garage.
I have poured a few sidewalks and a couple of small slabs over the years, so I thought it would be fun to do this little porch by myself.
I used a hand float to get the concrete level with my chalk line around the edges, and then I got a straight 2x4 to screed off the middle.
This porch is actually going to have pavers on top of it, so the finish doesn’t have to be perfect.
I tapped the side of the form boards with a hammer to make sure there’d be no voids.
Then I used a bull float to smooth out the concrete.
Now this porch has over 8’ of crushed stone underneath the concrete and in our area anytime you have more than 2’ of fill it has to be engineered.
And when it’s engineered, it’s required to be inspected before you pour.
Basically, the inspector is just making sure we followed the engineering and used the right size and quantity of rebar.
I put a really heavy broom finish on this, the texture should help the pavers bond to the concrete slab.
And wouldn’t you know it, right as I was done the new guy showed up. He said he would have helped but he didn’t want to get his new work boots dirty. @hausplans

Can’t blame the new guy for wanting to keep his new work boots clean. 😅

the most impressive part is finding a straight 2x4.

I don't do concrete anymore and I haven't for almost 15 years. Yet I can still hear my dad's voice everytime someone uses a hammer instead of a vibrator to remove air bubbles. "Tap tap". I was the designated tapper and I even have a scar on my hand from when I was using the hammer to tap a 150m long retaining wall (one of the steel ties ended up going through the side of my hand). When I don't think about the excruciatingly hard labor, those memories still make me smile

The new guy looks like he has years of experience . And can't blame him for minding his new boots especially when you have to buy 2 pairs at a time. The concrete is a fine job also 👍

THAT'S what that tool is! After my dad died there were a ton of tools in the garage I'd never seen before and never knew what they were for. That bull float was one. Now I know its name and what it does.

Everyone's complimenting The New Guy, the concrete quality, the project in general, but nobody's talking about the script, VO, editing, that stuff. Even with all the jokes (keep it up by the way) you make things understandable even to people with little to no experience with this stuff. Subbing for all that (and the crazy jobsite cooking!)
