Lisa your talks literally always coincide with whatever has been on my mind that week! Thanks for being so open and honest with us, I really enjoyed this talk. My husband and I bought our first home about 2 years ago, and the market here on the east coast is also so crazy right now, so we are also happy we got in at the right time! We rented shortly before buying and I agree no matter what type of home you have, it’s always a lot of work and maintenance. Hang in there! Love you!! 💕💕

This is so helpful considering my husband and I are starting the process of buying a home. What I've found most interesting is what we've discovered we want in a home.
I'm also hoping to take some night classes on different kinds of DIY and fix it subjects in hopes to keep on top of maintenance.

I bought my first home at 28 and have it paid off now at 34. I bought a "fixer upper". Put in the blood, sweat, tears and fear. My regret is not buying sooner in life. I moved for a new career when I was 22 to a new area. Everyone in my family told me to stay renting because I would end up back in my home town. Well I didn't and threw so much money away in rent. My mortgage was a fraction of what my rent was. Even if I would have moved back to my hometown I could have sold or rented out my home I bought. With all that if you are still reading kids, buy sooner!

Feeling the ac replacement pain right along with you! Such a massive bill, even with some planning in place that one hurt us a lot this year. Thankyou as always for sharing your thoughts and wisdom, got my vision therapy done whilst listening along and you truly brightened my day!

Love this talk! I think the only downside to home-ownership is that the maintenance is entirely on you (as you mentioned), but overall I think if you buy a home that already has good bones, hopefully nothing too crazy should come up in those early years. The expensive stuff we've done like a kitchen remodel was entirely optional and something we got to save up for/do on our own terms. The same thing with replacing our a/c and furnace, luckily we were able to save and do that as a preventative measure/upgrade, as opposed to doing it in a reactionary/emergency way. I've had my home since 2016 and there is a bit of underlying stress over hoping nothing catastrophic happens, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It's wonderful having this space and I'm grateful to have purchased it before the market went bonkers cuz I can no longer find houses in my area that were in my old price-range.

I know you mentioned this toward the end of the video, but lot of homeowners do purchase a home warranty to take that worry away. There are different plans available. When we purchased our home the previous homeowners actually sold the home with the home warranty which was really nice.

I rent out of necessity (just graduated college!) and our house was sold while we lived there. they didn’t kick us out, but the new owner adopted a new property manager who is so hard to work with. i’m looking forward to the someday where I can afford to own and not worry about this anymore!!!

Thank you for sharing this! My husband and I bought our first home 2 years ago. We are in our early 30s. It was really difficult and we have had some bad luck. As soon as we moved in everything started breaking. This made me feel less alone, and made me realize it was so worth it. My husband and I's biggest accomplishment as well.

Buying a house is crazy. My personal favorite part and by that I mean least favorite part is they give you a paper with all of the payments you'll be making on it and the interest you'll be paying broken down by month so you really feel the weight of the amount of money they're talking about.

Beware of appliance insurance! We bought a condo in Palm Springs and quickly realized the 50 year old air conditioner wouldn't cool below 90°. Paid $75 for a technician to come out. Would they cover it? No, because technically it was still "working". Same with the stacked washer/dryer. The washer screams like a banshee on the spin cycle and ONE towel takes 2 hours to dry. Will they cover it? Again, no. The appliance has to be DEAD or you pay for repairs yourself.

If they could just combine cheap rent with not having to live in the middle of nowhere like I do, I'd love it. I mean, rent is cheap where I live compared to a city, but that's relative. You had a good landlord. Where I live, you don't have an HOA, but you also have landlords that won't fix things for you if you don't want a rent increase and you can't afford to sue them over it, especially if they don't like that you have people in your home who aren't on the lease but have to live there. Even though you own the condo, I am surprised there's no maintenance people or something like that for the complex as a part of living there still. I mean, I can see you having to pay for yourself, but I would think that would be cheaper and faster than paying some outside company to fix something. A lot of people see renting as what they used to call "pouring your money down a rat hole" because you get nothing for it in the end unlike with buying. There are a lot of renters everywhere now, though, so that attitude might be changing.

A sad Subject on my mind. We lived in apartments never had money but 2012 my mom got opportunity to buy a condo in Florida. We had to move together to afford it. But I encouraged her to. We visited and basically never left. But ownership is hard. FFW she was living with her boyfriend over a year and a half I was alone in her condo taking care of it alone. I’m on disability income but paid her HOA ten years. Shared expenses etc. Washer dryer was shared but this HOA covered a lot of important maintenance. So it seemed beneficial . Plus swimming pools (indoor pool too)

But. It wasn’t practical to live divided. He was renting and lease running out. I had plans in mind I knew what would work. Sell in the hot market and rent until it cooled. He wanted to control the narrative. I was getting very sick. I wasn’t asking much I needed swimming safe accessible and separated bedrooms and privacy.

I didn’t get a chance. He found a listing and pressured my mom to buy. I do like the area walk to store around lakes but HOA is crap management is totally Sus the clubhouse burned down $4 million to rebuild a janky clubhouse no indoor pool and the tiny crappy single pool for the entire place not touched no safety ledge too small and shallow for how I adapted to swim and salt in the wound she was manipulated to overpay 😭

First storm my bedroom had a flood underneath the window floor causing damage. Roof insurance fixed but still.

I’m so lost and her boyfriend is being a lazy selfish ass.

At customers homes if there is not bathroom I have to hide in the corner of there fence to go to bathroom sometime it number 2 but I cover myself with a garbage bag so no one can see me. I have tried to jiggle customers door handles for maybe I can use there bathroom but they always lock there doors now. Smh

It would be a lot of fun if you bought a house and we got to see how you would decorate it and maybe renovate some of it!
