How Big are the Largest Sea creatures in Fiction?

Показать описание
We all know that the seas and oceans of the world are full of beautiful, weird and wacky creatures that are uniquely adapted to survive in the environments that they call home. However, the human imagination can sometimes be more fascinating than the reality of the world, if we can truly say these creatures come from the imaginations of men and women throughout history and not simply creatures that have been lost to time.

Stuff like this makes me wonder whether a writer actually intended their big monster to truly be big on that scale, or whether they just threw out a big number without any thought to how big that would make their monster.

Idk why, but the idea of SCP 169 just being an ungodly UNIT of a eurypterid is really funny to me.

5 km for God Of War's Jormungandr is too short for a "world serpent" unless it's a very tiny world the size of a city.

The Problem I see when they get to be a few hundred kilometers or more is the ocean is nor deep enough to hide them unless SCP 169 looks as flat as a piece of paper in comparison to its width and lenght it would be tens or hundreads of kilometers hight.

What about the one I made up just now? His power is to always be bigger than every other monster

According to Goji centre biologically accurate Bloop would be around 35 metres and it has to be an amphibian.

Even larger than the World Serpent and by an unfathomabke amount would be SCP-5909, a shrimp measuring in a 2.1 light years across.

Cthulhu can still be bigger than any of these, because he can change his size based on what he wants to be.

it cracks me up that the sea scorpion they used for SCP 169 is a filter feeder. It's been a hot minute since I've looked at the eurypterid family line but I'm reasonably sure that one was one of the last of its lineage and did not hunt or kill but filter fed. If memory serves that one also lived in the forming freshwater riverways where there was less competition and fewer predators to evade.

Yay, I came in expecting you just to mention the Gargantuan leviathan, but you also mentioned Tolkien's maiars and valars! Even SCP, wow you got everything.

tolkien never did specifiy the size of the valar or maiar; also lovecraft gave just vague descriptions of cthulhu; it being indescripeable horrific and madness-inducing.

I’m pretty sure the bloop was recently confirmed to be a shattering iceberg, or something like that.

Please don’t quote me on this, because I don’t remember off the top of my head. But I’m also certain scientists recently were able to confirm what made the sound, and it was not a creature. From what I remember, it was a giant iceberg or ice cap that broke off, and caused the sound. Keep in mind, some people still believe it was a massive creature, because it’s still still a mystery for people who don’t believe the iceberg idea.

Cthulhu is an eldritch entity. For something to be eldritch, it must be beyond the limits of human comprehension. We don't know how big Cthulhu is, because we are unable to process his form. For all we know, he doesn't exist within the concept of size.

In a novel, by Ben Bova, written in the 70's I think, features gigantic whales that swim through the thick atmosphere of Jupiter and they average a length of 6 miles. Good book by the way, but it's like 800 pages.

At this point, these creatures don’t even have weight, they just have a gravitational pull

This was cool. The gargantuan leviathan skeleton was just a juvenile. Most people believe the adult was about 2000 to 2500 meters if you base it on the mod. No one really knows but still cool video!!
