Understanding “All Men Are Created Equal”—Dr. Matthew Spalding on Rejecting Revisionist History

In the founding of America, some suggest the idea that “all men are created equal” was a lie, written by hypocrites in a time of slavery. When the New York Times’ controversial 1619 Project was first published, it’s introduction stated that it “aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding."

How should we understand America’s founding and its promise that “all men are created equal”?

Today, we sit down with Dr. Matthew Spalding, a professor of constitutional government and Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College. He was the executive director of the 1776 Commission, created by executive order by former President Trump, which published a report defending America’s founding aspirations.

We were an English colony in 1619. We didn't become an American country until 1776 or 1789 when our Constitution was written. Less than 80 years after that we abolished the slavery that we inherited.

We recently celebrated Australia Day on the 26th January. Sadly, We are going through a similar re-writing of history down here too. Liberals and our own ABC ( Australian Broadcasting Commission) referred to Australia Day as “Invasion Day” and are pushing for the date to be changed. As a nation we have recognised the hardships and heartache that Indigenous Australians went through. A former prime minister publicly apologised and we have “Sorry Day” every year to remind us of how evil we are 😞 we have NAIDOC week to celebrate Indigenous culture, welcome to country declaration’s are given at the beginning of every work, sporting event, school assembly and the like thanking our Indigenous ancestors past present and emerging. Millions of dollars have been poured into Indigenous communities, their flag is flown on all government buildings and government policies are in place to ensure Indigenous Australians have preferential treatment to educational institutions and government agencies. Most Aussies embrace our Indigenous culture and see it as part of who we are and what makes us great. All this however, is still not enough. Our recognition of Indigenous culture and people seems to be tainted by this never ending guilt for sins of the past and can’t seem to move forward. Having said all that, Indigenous leaders that want to move forward are called all the usual racist slurs by the ( you guessed it) white liberals 🤦‍♀️

The question should of been asked at the time (1776) when it was written what they meant by ""all men are created equal""! Everyone needs to remember that the world was very different back then. It is also important to point out that THERE ALSO WAS WHITE PEOPLE THAT WERE SLAVES ALSO! THEY WERE CALLED ""INDENTURED SLAVES""! Slavery was NOT solely a ""BLACK"" thing!
