I made this video a few years ago when I got into the hobby of collecting broken china during the pandemic.
It's a little cringy now for a few reasons. But it's cool to see how much my interests, video skills, and knowledge have changed and grown since I first started making videos.
I wish I had kept the original footage I took so I could remake the video and script, but it's all deleted now

You are doing what archeologists call "cross mending". It's like a jigsaw puzzle without a picture.

my house is 250 years old, so I totally understand the feeling of finding cool things near your house!

I have a serving platter from around 1810 that looks VERY much like this. Mine is oval, Thanksgiving turkey kind of shape...but the glaze and painting is really similar.

My great-grandmother was Chippewa, her grandmother left the shitty area they had all been forced into and came across the country on a covered wagon with that platter wrapped in extra bedclothes. My Nana was born here in SF, and when she died at 100yrs old was one of about 20 ppl remaining who still remembered living through the 1906 earthquake. Their house was destroyed and they lived in Golden Gate Park in a tent for months. The only part she really remembered was eating beans out of a can--she was a toddler. I mean....what would we expect. ❤

DUDE THATS SO COOL!! Submit that to your local museum mate! I’m sure they’ll be happy to display it!

It’s called “flow blue.” That would be a very valuable platter if intact.

What FUN ! I'm 60 & still love digging up stuff like this where family moved to early 1900's & 30's ...but not THAT BIG 😎 But did find med bottles from my great-great-uncles place who was a horse&buggy doc...and his wife's snuff bottles 😸

I grew up in Plymouth MA and now live on Cape. I think I take for granted all the history we have here. I was always so jealous of my family in Ireland and Sweden where I was born, as it seemed Europe had such a longer recorded history, but I forget that we have some of the longest in the US and that Native American history is just as long as storied. This is so cool. I love being reminded of what I have so close to home ❤

My grandma would love this bc she likes old things that remind her of her childhood. She also has mugs with faces on them☺️😂

Nice. This just makes me think of the beginning of a HORROR MOVIE! Don't dig up and use/fix buried things from an old ass house.

Fill the cracks with gold paint. It will be beautiful.

Yep can relate. My house is over 100 years old 😂

6ft under ground may mean that was a latrine at the time. So extremely old there's likely no risk. Outhouses were a way to get rid of broken things that could not be burned or otherwise broken down.

If you want it professionally restored, restorers are near you I’m sure. You can just Google search art restoration near me or pottery repair near me or ceramic repair near me or porcelain repair near me. Either way, We can properly professionally reassemble that tray and make it as if it was never broken. Making it a usable functional and beautiful piece for your home.

It’s so sad to see it in pieces and it doesn’t look like much coming together, but once it’s whole again and filled and retouched, it can be like new again.

But I definitely wouldn’t recommend superglue or a gorilla glue. Neither are ideal for ceramic or porcelain or pottery artifacts.

Do Kintsugi. A Japanese method in which you fill the cracks with gold so the imperfections are visible and not seen as ugly.
