It depends on the type of helmet, American helmets were penetrable, while German helmets could withstand bullets.

My grandpa was a WW2 vet, and he said if a bullet hit you at an angle, the bullet would ricochet, and boy did that hurt. I said "wait old man, you were shot in the head." He said, "I don't know, could of been a rock." Lol. I miss that old man

Tip: the WW2 helmet at direct hits can be slowed down but the soldier still can be killed, but the WW2 helmets some times can be removed by hitting it+they use it to fool the snipers

WW2 American helmets specifically, Japanese and German helmets were able to stop lower caliber rounds

They prioritized shrapnel because that was 80-90% of causualties. There were a LOT of bombs... you were glad to have that helmet. Lot of bullets, but you likely encountered artillery 2 or 3 times more often than engaged with enemy personnel directly. And something like only a fraction of them do the engaging. You got truck drivers, clerks, ect. Who had to deal with the risk of being bombed but not necessary shot at(ideally).

The same goes for modern helmets in most militaries. Yes they might stop small caliber rounds but they're not designed to be bulletpeoof. They're designed to protect the head against fragmentation and shrapnel.

when i was in the army they explained we don’t wear helmets that stop bullets because while you could be saved from the bullet, the force of the impact could snap your neck
