In the tests, conducted at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, the 58-caliber XM1299 cannon used a “supercharged” propellant to fire two types of munitions about 65 kilometers — much farther than a traditional howitzer’s 18-kilometer range. The Army has ordered 18 XM1299s from BAE Systems, and aims to send them to a battalion in 2023.

As the Iraqis found out, the autoloader was no match for the strong right arm of the young American tankers who loaded their M1 Abrams manually. 4th crew member, the loader, was the youngest, and was there to learn.

Yeah doubling the range is obviously a big step and I'm impressed. But that's only part of it though and there's a lot missing from this. What's the barrel life and accuracy degradation after how many shots with that so called supercharged propellant? Bore erosion and flame cutting is a major barrel life and accuracy reducer as the velocity increases. Nitriding the bore is old tech but can help to increase bore life. If they have even new coatings and can get decent bore life with that new propellant that's also a massive step forward. If the bore life is poor they really haven't accomplished much.
