What do "Manhattan" and "First Lightning" have in common? These were the first two nuclear explosions that changed the world forever. "Manhattan" was the American project led by Robert Oppenheimer and his team of physicists, including Enrico Fermi and Richard Feynman. On July 16, 1945, in the Alamogordo desert, a 20-kiloton explosion created a fireball visible from 300 kilometers away. The mushroom cloud rose 12 kilometers, leaving an 80-meter crater.

On August 29, 1949, the USSR responded with "First Lightning." On the Semipalatinsk test site, under the leadership of Igor Kurchatov and with the participation of Andrei Sakharov and Yulii Khariton, a 22-kiloton explosion was carried out. A 70-meter crater and a cloud rising 10 kilometers—this explosion signaled the start of the nuclear arms race, where fear and power shaped the new world order.
