Wow! Upset of upsets! The players in that Aussie side read like a who's who of Aussie greats: Lewis, Stirling, Pearce, Kenny, the list goes on. Kia Kaha to the mighty Kiwis.

A changing of the guard for both teams. NZ went for some experience with some unknowns and Australia went with the same approach. Gary Mercer, the BoP man played his best game ever. I still have a #5 jersey from this era. Legend. Great mullet as well.

I remember this one like yesterday.
Gary Mercer played club footy for pikiao in rotorua. I played against him for tauranga.
They would beat us everytime.
But when he scored in the corner, he was playing for all of us.

Taylor our new Prop Forward came in to tackle Tunks who took exception, but Taylor was no shrinking violet and gave Tunks the 1 2 scuffle. Nice one stu as the saying goes. Wish he had been available in 86 as Dane, Kevin and Mark had all retired or were not available. Even though Kurt was wonderful, and Mark was sublime we needed another hard nut prop forward to allow our backs to play.

I remember watching this game.The Kangaroos beat us 3-0 in a test series in 1986 and then went undefeated on a tour to the British Isles and France later that year.Kiwis were under dogs but played their hearts out to defeat the Aussie’s.

I remember this game a year after the 1986 Australian side crushed the kiwis 3 - 0 in a test series then N.Z made a few big changes with a new unknown coach and a few new faces Sammy Stewart, Gary Mercer a teenager named Kevin Iro up against the likes of Lewis, Kenny and Sterling That's a lot of footie I.Q on the field ... but the kiwis pulled off a big upset and was great for N.Z rugby league
