What does it mean that believers are to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16)? What does it mean to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world?

Short and Simple:
Salt had many uses back then.
1. The salty water of Dead Sea contains potassium which was used as fertilizer.
2. Salt was also used as a sanitizer for example they would salt to cover up their bodily waste.
3. Preservative.

Seems like the first two are almost always missed out but the ancient semetic people. Salt is growth, salt is clean, salt is pure, salt preserves and it enhances what’s already there. Be Salt of the Earth.

Salt also creates thirst. A thirst for saturation in the Word.

If you’re reading this… check out Luke 14: 34-35. Ask the Father for the understanding of “the soil” and “the manure pile” as it refers to salt and why it was important to the Jewish culture in those times. Ask him for understanding… :)

How do you know if a believer has lost its saltiness

Jesus liken Christian as salt and light. Notice Jesus did not say if the salt loses its saltiness, is it fake salt. This is indeed a warning to all believers. If a believer loses his/ her effectiveness, it is worthless. Ephesians 4:1, 2 Thes 11:1.
Also, read Matthew 25:30. What happened to the worthless servant?
