Half marathon pacing strategy. How fast should you run?

Half marathon pacing strategy. How fast should you run? As tempting as it might be to bolt off at a sprint, running a half marathon requires a clear pacing strategy in order to achieve your fastest time.

Getting a half marathon PB requires planning and strategy, even if that strategy is a furious sprint from start to finish - at least it's a plan.

Not as long as a full marathon, a half marathon requires a fine balance of speed and endurance.

All out attack or a more measured approach? What's best for you? Listen to my advice on pacing for the half marathon.

My favorite quote of yours is on 5K pacing strategy..."You drop the hammer and you just fucking go for it." It doesn't get any better than that!

Great honest advice and humble account of your race. My 1st half marathon is in 2 weeks. This video inspired me to pace according to course and run negative splits. Had a 90 min run scheduled - ran 12miles in 1h 26m. Bring on Race Day. Thank you.

Nice vid mate. Been running for 2 years now but only did my first competitive HM 3 weeks ago in a 1:38....PB is 1:25. Completely got my pace wrong, didnt study the course and changed too many things the last minute. Will be following your vids from now on, very informative :)

Excellant advice for all.Vintage sub 2:25 marathon runner here that has gone out too fast more than once and faded quickly.Know the course, plan your pacing.

Funny story about the whole fast start thing. I was in the last corral for a half marathon (my first), and for a half a mile was alone with my 8 minute pace until I caught up to the previous corral people. I can't tell you how many people on the side told me to slow down and yelling how I was going to tire myself out, but when I finished the race my average mile was an 8:24. Same thing with the 10k the day before, except I went out with a 7:30 and finished with a 7:40 average (These were disneyland runs so there were lots of runners and "jogging" walkers alike). Honestly, I was out there to have fun, I didn't think about pacing or times (except that I wanted to break 2 hours for the half). Usually the first mile is about 10-30 seconds per mile faster, but then it just makes all of the others seem easier, except in the cases of training runs, then it feels the other way around!

No distance world record has ever been set with a positive split. So 'just fucking go for it' from the start is the wrong advice. Sure, go hard for the last 5ks....but not the first 5

Got Stafford HM tomorrow morning. Hoping for a sub 90. I need to average about 6:52 per mile. I've just checked my 2016 laps to work out where the hills might be, so will take that into consideration. Some laps are considerably slower, so imagine the hills would be in there somewhere.
