ROCO’s In Concert series opened on September 23 and 24 with “Family” at Miller Outdoor Theatre and The Church of St. John the Divine!

Artistic Partner Mei-Ann Chen led the orchestra in a program inspired by community, family, and hope, honoring Houston’s cultural diversity. Juan Pablo Contreras‘ Mariachitlán takes you to the colorful streets of the composer’s birthplace in Jalisco, Mexico, featuring a mariachi band, and the traditional Vietnamese folk song Bèo dạt mây trôi, tells the story of longing to be reunited with missing loved ones.

Grammy-nominated guitarist Mak Grgic featured as soloist in the world premiere of Borders, a ROCO-commissioned guitar concerto by Michael Abels (composer for the films NOPE, GET OUT, and US), echoing themes of strife and healing. Ludwig van Beethoven‘s dramatic Symphony No. 5, nicknamed the “Fate Symphony,” wrapped up the evening, reminding us that our fate can be in our own hands, encouraging us to write our own stories.

Couldn’t believe that a traditional Vietnamese folk song can be arranged and beautifully played by Western instruments. Thank you! I didn’t know this song until I was 18, but my parents and my aunts/ uncles know this song very well.

Tôi rất cảm động khi thấy các bạn nước ngoài thể hiện bài này. Tuy nhiên tôi cảm thấy các nhạc công mới chỉ dừng lại ở việc thể hiện đúng các nốt nhạc theo bản nhạc. Nó còn thiếu cái hiểu và thổi hồn vào bản nhạc của người thể hiện nhất là đoạn sáo. Bài này mang giai điệu u buồn da diết của người con gái có chồng đang đi xa chưa về. Người con gái góng đợi mà chờ mãi không thấy chồng về. Vì vậy người con gái đó cảm thấy thân phận mình như cây bèo, đám mây trôi trên dòng nước mà không biết tương lai mình sẽ đi về đâu. Vì ở xã hội Việt Nam xưa người con gái phải theo chồng, nếu chồng chết thì cũng ở vậy nuôi con
