How I Overseeded my Lawn for LESS than $75

Overseeding your Lawn will make it look INCREDIBLE!

In this video, we go over the exact steps on how to seed and overseed your lawn.

1. Tools needed- The first tool needed for overseeding grass is a seed spreader, I prefer to use the manual Scotts spreader as the small size leads to a very controlled application of grass seed. The second thing we will need is the grass seed itself. The third thing is a lawn sprinkler with a misting setting.

2. Timing is EVERYTHING- The number one factor that will determine the success of your seeding project is timing. Some people like pre germinating grass seed to help speed up the process but personally, we like to have our seed down on the ground by labor day weekend when overseeding in the fall.

3. Scalp before Seeding- Its important to mow your lawn down low before overseeding to give you baby grass seeds the best chance of to germinate. By mowing mow, it will allow sun to get down to the soil encouraging the new grass to grow. Also by mowing low, you will shock the existing grass and stunt its growth which will be beneficial to the new grass seed to grow.

4. Grass Seed- Grass seed will be the most expensive part of our project. If your not sure what type of grass you have then I recommend getting the Scotts sun and shade grass seed or the Jonathan Green Sun and shade grass seed which both contain a mix of perennial ryegrass, kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. These both contain a mix of grass that can blend well in any lawn.

5. Lawn Roller- This step is optional but is highly recommended. You can rent a lawn roller at your local tool store for a fairly cheap price. Rolling your grass seed after applying will press the seeds directly into the soil which will increase your chances of having seed to soil contact.

6. Fertilizer- There are many fertilizers you can use when seeding. Today we will be applying an organic Milorganite type of fertilizer that has a high amount of phosphorus. The number one nutrient that helps develops strong roots to your new grass is phosphorus.

7. WATER WATER WATER- Proper watering is the number one most important factor when it comes to successfully seeding your lawn. We want to keep the top layer of soil moist at ALL times during the germination process. This usually equates to water 3-4 times a day for 5 minutes each time.

One of the best lawn channels on YouTube. Consistently more articulate than the other guys without all the nonsense. As always, great information!

Always love your style, you combine Hayne and Knorr level knowledge but in a much more homeowner grade explanation. Almost to the point where its relaxing! haha

Great video and great content, George. Not loaded with BS minutia added just for the sake of hearing yourself talk. Straight and to the point, with great explanations. Thank you!! Still working up the nerve to try the Blue Def!

The Scott’s sun & shade seed is a really great “big box” option. A mix of kbg, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue. Can be cut low or to about three inches.

Thank you for another great video. No mubo jumbo direct and simple. If and when water restrictions are lifted I'll be over seeding.

Going to try my first overseeding this fall. Using Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra seed, with Yard Mastery Starter fert. I’ll first scalp from 4” to 2”. Rake in seed. Watering 2 times a day will have to suffice. I work all day, no auto irrigation. Target date of September 30. Thanks for this video!

Nice explanation..this year is the first time in 5 years I'm not overseeding. The lawn doesn't need it, so I'm taking a break this fall

I am really surprised you didn’t recommend Scott’s starter fert w/ tenacity. This stuff is a miracle worker for new grass and watching weeds turn white is nice.

George, i watch so many of these lawntube videos that its rare that i learn something new. Yet i got a couple of pearls of wisdom from you lately. 1 dont rototill because it makes your lawn lumpy and 2 use a misters to not wash away your seed. Great content! It helps a ton. Also jessy is bad ass. I fertalize with liquid urea. I learned it from one of his vids. Pretty cool company you keep. Jason and jessy. Lol

Protip for next year. I got that Scotts hand crank spreader for $5 on clearance at Walmart in late October of last year. It seems like they clearance out a bunch of lawn & garden stuff so they can make room for more Christmas stuff.

The battery operated Scotts spreader gets horrible reviews however.. Ryobi make s 18V battery powered hand held spreader. I believe I paid $50 for it (tool only) Best $50 I ever spent! It is prety much my go to spreader. Most of what I spread goes down at about 4-5 pounds per 1, 000sft The hopper easily holds 5 pounds of most product. I may have to stop and refill it often, but I can still cover my whole 5, 000 sft yard in about 20-25 minutes. If you've already got Ryobi batteries this might be a good option for you!

You are right on time with this video! My lawn renovation starts tomorrow!! Also, don't forget about the Groundskeeper II rake for detaching. It's a back-saver for small to medium yards. Thanks again!!!
