Yesterday I'm driving minding my own business and a kid across the double yellow and smacked my mirror. I drive a F-250 and the kid was driving a big new 2500 HD truck. I didn't even turn around. I just pulled over and the kid turned around and pulled in behind me. He was shaking. First thing he said was " I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying attention " what he didn't know was my mirror had been hit once before when I was parked. I asked him how old he was and if he has his own insurance. He is 19 and he just got his own insurance 6 months ago. I'm 35. I did stupid shit when I was a kid. A new mirror is $150. I told the kid that we were basically both in the same boat and that I'm just going to buy myself a new mirror and he should buy himself a new mirror and we parted ways. I was within my right to ask for his insurance but the fact that he stopped and took responsibility for his actions was more than enough for me. I would gladly pay $150 to keep my driving and insurance record clean like it is.

I actually took advantage of this. Drunk driver totaled my Civic’s rear end, actually *tented* the rear axle, but instead of having it repaired, I just pocketed the money and bought a bicycle instead, partially because I was terrified of going anywhere in a car for a few weeks after that.

edit ok wasn’t expecting this to blow up so I’m gonna address a few questions

One; rear axle probably isn’t the right word, but the thing the rear wheels are attached to? So they can spin? That thing. I’m not a car guy, and I literally could not give a fuck less about the semantics- you KNOW what I’m talking about.

Two; Yes. My car was destroyed, and I was afraid of being in a tiny metal crunchable box for a few weeks afterwards, so I bought a bicycle, which is cheaper to initially purchase AND maintain, gives me good, necessary exercise and sun exposure, and can be taken into more claustrophobic locations and paths more easily. Not sure why this seems to be a point of questioning. “iF yOu HAvE bIkE LanEs” I live somewhere where people do tend to be observant of bicyclists, provided they’re not riding against traffic and they’re as far to the side of the road as reasonably possible. “But just because you haven’t been hit doesn’t mean you won’t be” that’s a risk you assume no matter what mode of transportation you use, even if its just walking. I trusted my bicycle more than my car for a while because if you can believe it, being in a life-threatening accident can cause a bit of lasting trauma and a sense of distrust that a bike doesn’t evoke while a car does!

When I was in college, someone backed into my car when I was in the store. He was very honest, came looking for me and gave me his insurance info. Well, the only mechanics that his insurance covered near me was too far. As a college student, I didnt have the time, and the damage wasnt severe and everything still functioned, it just looked bad, so I was feeling no rush.
After months of this, they just sent me the check for the estimated amount to fix that part. Ended up putting the money towards a mechanical issue in my car and it stayed ugly until the day it crapped out a couple years later.

Best to just not let the dog drive. Problem solved 😊

As long as you're not at fault, 100%. People keep hitting me, doing little more than paint damage, and I keep taking the cheque. Works best with beaters.

I hit a deer and the body shop low balled their estimate. I looked up all the parts and the total was four or five hundred dollars more than their estimate not even including labor. Don’t know if I could have disputed it or not but I just took the money and repaired the parts myself lol, ording anything I couldn’t fix

In insurance we call this one of two things. Cash in lieu (because it's in lieu of repairs) or retention of salvage. Cash in lieu is for when your car is economically speaking repairable but you don't want it repaired or just don't want it repaired by who we as the insurance company want to repair it.

Retention of salvage is for when your car should be written off because the repairs would more than the value of the car but the person really wants to keep the car so we pay them for the value of the car minus the salvage value it had which is usually between 5-10%.

So if my fender was damaged to the point of being unrepairable, and I got into another crash that damaged in further, would I have gotten enough to replace the fender twice? That sounds like an infinite money glitch that some people might call "insurance fraud".

As someone that works at a body shop and has to listen to the adjusters bitch about insurance PLEASE be more active in pressuring the insurance companies because generally insurance adds one week on the front end 2 weeks in the middle and another week on at the end .

I've got close to $7k in insurance payouts & another $2k in "we don't have to report this & can just go to my banks ATM" cash for a car I paid $3k for 7 years ago & have got 50k miles out of cause ppl keep snacking into it.

Jalopies are the best 😂.

My dad got in an accident that damaged the front right corner. About two days after he got it back from the shop, he hit a deer on the front right corner. The insurance company was suspicious, but fortunately the body shop guy took before, during, and after photos, so we could prove the car had been repalred and that the damage was similar but different the second time around.

You're compensated for the loss in value, not the cost for replacement. Though they're often the same, frequently they are not— total loss write-offs work on this mechanism.

Insurance company didn't want to pay to fix my hood because it had preexisting hail damage 😂. "The new one would be nicer"

I love this channel because of the information it provides me as someone’s who’s just getting into the world of being a “real” adult! Thank you for this information, though hopefully I wont be getting into any crashes, let alone two

So i can do insurance fraud twice without getting a new car? This is perfect

If you do this, you increase the chances the insurance company totals your car in the second accident because a car with damage on it is worth less than one without, so it might tip the scale toward totaling being cheaper than repairing

I don't think an insurance company would even give money here in NZ except for a write off. They always take the car to their repair shop and have it repaired. If the repair is too expensive they keep the car and give you the money to buy a new one.

Woah buddy. Not how it usually works. That's how it works *when you hire an attorney to fight your claim for you*.
The attorney will likely cost more than the fender...
