FUN FACT: There's some villages in polar bear regions where people don't lock their front door in case someone is walking down the road and sees a polar bear they can run into the house before they get attacked. Sounds crazy to 99% of us but most of these small towns everyone knows one another so that helps.

Danielle: crying and in awe
Momma Bear: "How do I eat you?"

Why do they gotta make an apex predator that could kill me in an instant so adorable? I acknowledge that I would _definitely_ die if I tried, but I just wanna hug them!

Out of all the wild predators in the world that deserve respect, polar bears have to be one of the top ones since they do deliberately hunt humans given the opportunity as well.

Human: "Seeing an apex predator look at you from just a few centimeters away is magical and life-changing"
Polar Bear: "How do I access this dessert bar?"

Polar bears are awesome. I honestly hope they survive, the Arctic wouldn't be the same without them.

Danielle, you got me crying as well. What a moment! Polar Bears are majestic! This is your best story yet. I'm so envious. ❤ Since you were there, a story on the Arctic Fox would be cool, too. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Such a beautiful episode. And a positive one too, adapting human settlements to the bear's behavioral change due to climate change.
Thank you Danielle and team!

CBC has a series called "Artic Vets" which is about the Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Conservancy which works with the Churchill population. They have lots of content on Polar Bear generally as well as conservation of other Arctic animals.

If you ever get a chance to visit Cochrane you can get to see some rehabilitated polar bears with just a pane of glass between you and them. Churchill is probably a better experience because it's their actual environment. But Cochrane is pretty impressive. They've given them land with a stocked Lake so the bears can go hunting.

I imagine once the bears realized you weren't food (or easily accessible food 😂), they were just curious about everyone. That was a really beautiful moment. Also, I don't know why I assumed polar bears lived in Antarctica. It was one of those assumptions I made and never thought through.

Danielle,

I’d love to see you do a video on your illustrations and sketches, and how it’s informed your understanding of anatomy and nature.

I love how much this experience moved you. I think we would all feel the same.

One of those problem bears was Mercedes who ended up at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. She spent her last years at Highland Wildlife Park testing a new, more natural enclosures with a rather surprising barrier, deer fencing! When Mercedes was given a health check, the old girl still had all of the fur between the pads on her feet, something that is apparently unusual in polar bears housed in an all concrete enclosure.

When I saw her crying, I saw her passion. She is truly inspiring.

The fact that humans have found a way to co-exist (somewhat) peacefully with one of our natural predators is an amazing feat

I remember my school talking about a program they run where they take students up there to Churchill to learn about polar bears. This video is really cool :)
