If Anne had had a son, she would have been safe enough. The mistresses would have stayed as mistresses and would not have supplanted her. It was only his quest for a son that led him to marry his mistresses. He couldn't divorce her bc he'd already done that to Catherine. He had to make it look like her fault. Hence, the charge of adultery.
