Serial No. 88 Season 5 Episode No. 21
Air Vice marshal B K Bishnoi
Stories from the Battlefield 28 Squadron, MIGs over Tezgaon Dacca
In the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh, ten IAF fighter squadrons of Hunters, Sukhois, Gnats and MIGs were deployed to ground the adversary's Air Force so that Indian ground forces could move swiftly to meet its terminal objective of liberating Bangladesh in face of a threat of an UN mandated cease fire.
By all accounts the 14 squadron of PAF flying Sabres fought hard, well and held firm posing a risk to the plans of the Indian Military.
What happens next is cratering the Tezgaon runway leading to the grounding of the fighter squadron. This allowed the IAF to dominate the skies allowing the heliborne operations to Sylhet, the helilift of 6000 troops across Meghna, the Tangail and leading to the fall of Dacca.
This story is narrated by Wing Commander (later AVM ) B K Bishnoi CO 28 Squadron (Supersonics) flying MIGs.
