Zum 50. Jubiläum von Keith Jarretts legendärem "Köln Concert" spielte das WDR Funkhausorchester "Memories Of Tomorrow - The New Köln Concert". Komponist Bernd Wilden und Pianist Stephan Görg entwickelten aus Jarretts Originalmotiven eine zwölfsätzige Konzertsuite, in der sich neukomponierte Musik für Orchester (Wilden) und Jazzband (Görg) mit freier Improvisation zu einem einzigartigen Crossover-Projekt verbanden. Live aufgezeichnet am 21.02.2025 im Funkhaus Wallraffplatz Köln.

Der Pianist ist ein Wahnsinn und das Klavier das er verwendet hat keinen Schaden (das von Jarret damals war ja leicht defekt), das ist von einer unglaublichen Wärme und Schönheit. Danke fürs hochladen, und ich mein wie bitte, dafür brauche ich nichts zu zahlen, gar nichts, ich hör mir das einfach so an auf youtube, ist irgendwie irre. Gibt's was Schöneres als ein reales riesiges Orchester live zu hören, die Bläser, die Geigen, der Conga Spieler wie großartig ist das bitte alles.

I was crying when Keith gave an interview to Rick Beato after his stroke, with a residual hemiparesis, knowing he can’t play piano anymore (only with the right hand). This is an incredible, creative, wonderful hommage on highest level to Keith. The homeland of J.S. Bach is saying “Thank you Keith!”❤

No point in judging this against the original; an apples and oranges comparison. It just has to be appreciated as a hybrid symphonic work with some beautiful orchestrations and lovely thematic use. If you’re waiting for any player to capture the improvisational and emotional intensity of Jarrett you might be waiting a while😁. This was a very satisfying listen, but I’ll agree with some of the others in that I felt it never truly caught fire, but congratulations to all for this large undertaking.

PS Herrschaften was ihr da gemacht edelste, geistigste was man sich musikalisch gerade in unserem Land antun kann! So fein arangiert, solch Balsam für die Seele, als Kenner von Keiths Werk (der ja nur noch eine Hand benutzen kann) so spannend diese Interpretation, pure Liebe, grösssten Respekt und Menschen können wenn sie wollen so viel schönes und grosses in Welt bringen! Würde mich interessieren wie Mr Jaerret darauf reagiert!

What an undertaking! How innovative, refreshing and surprising, too. The journey is much like a memory of yesterday, a journey through a very familiar landscape that has continued to bloom and grow almost beyond recognition yet is totally familiar, beautiful as before and I never lose my way. So many references to other KJ songs weave their way through the movements - My Song, Prism, Treasure Island … and pieces from his many improvisations. It’s a marvel of creation, beautifully played and recorded. Bravo Bernd, Stephan and the entire orchestra. - - - - - (and Köln should never be a Klon)

Was für ein ambitioniertes Projekt, welch gelungene Umsetzung - Glückwunsch! Und meinen Respekt für die immense Arbeit, die nötig gewesen sein muss, um diesen Abend (und hoffentlich noch viele weitere) Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen! Es hat Spaß gemacht, neben den Köln Concert Elementen auch weitere Zitate (Heartland, Bremen Encore - Lob an dieser Stelle auch an den Gitarristen, etc.) zu entdecken. Es ist zu hoffen, dass Jarrett das einmal sieht und hört; selbst wenn er nicht der größte Fan seines Köln Concerts ist, dürfte ihm diese Hommage sehr gefallen...

Nachdem ich das Projekt schon einmal in kleiner Besetzung in der Pallottikirche an Haus Wasserburg in Vallendar miterleben durfte und auch dort schon begeistert war, wie kreativ die Musiker, insbesondere Stephan Görg, mit der Musik von Jarrett umging und gewissermaßen mit ihm zusammen weiterdachte und improvisierte, bin ich von diesem Konzert noch einmal sehr tief berührt. Es geht ja nicht darum Jarrett nachzuspielen, sondern inspiriert von ihm und seiner Musik etwas Neues zu schaffen, das gleichzeitig Verbundenheit signalisiert und vor allem in der Kombination einer Jazzformation mit einem großen Orchester Tiefe, Klangkörper, Präzision erreicht, die jede:n nur begeistern kann. Danke. Ich freue mich schon auf weitere Projekte.

Thanks for the refreshing musical impulses, which are - understandably - somewhat different to "the original". The question is: how can you be faithful to an original masterpiece like "The Köln Concert"? One answer is: if you follow the work's impulses, although the product might be somewhat different in the end. What's striking here, is the connection of classical music (orchestration, baroque suite, polyphonic texture), lots of spherical sounds (reminds me a bit of Jan Garbareks "Visible World") and rather jazzy improvisation parts. A synthesis in the spirit of what Jarrett is known for. So, again, thanks for creating and sharing this!
