It's the way the US views Japanese variety show content...it's not really meant to ridicule or to praise. It's something in between. Americans love Japanese pop culture, but also think it is strange and amusing. Everyone would know this to be an exaggeration.

It seems like at some point in the 60's (unless it started earlier) Americans and Japanese people were both very interested in each other's customs and cultures that continues to this day. I drive a Honda, and I love it!

There is an entire episode where the Simpsons travel to Japan. But I think that episode was banned in Japan because of one scene where Homer wrestles with Japan's Emperor.
The episode is called "Thirty Minutes over Tokyo".

By the way, you should check the official Japanese dub for this episode on youtube. Its very interesting because even though the original commercial was made in Japanese it was redubbed by the Japanese because they obviously didnt think it sounds like authentic Japanese. Its funny because the dialogs dont change that much.
