Oil Painting Portrait Study alla prima | Bold color portrait

In this tutorial I paint a portrait of Albert Einstein using unrealistic bold colors. The point of this exercise is to not think so much about color and more about value. Value is how light or dark a color is. Since you don't have to worry about matching color you can focus on value. Every time I pick up a new color I am thinking where does this fall on the value scale in relation to the rest of the colors.
Materials
Titanium White
Cadmium Red Hue
Cadmium Lemon
French Ultramarine
Yellow Ochre
Cerulean blue

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I watched a Mark Carder video where he pointed out an amazing painting that was good because of the values being accurate but the Colors were all orange and it looked a little like einstein. I didn't realize until later that it was your painting! I watched your video on painting it (from a black and white picture) Really great picture!

Anyone watching had any one on one coaching? Does he make corrections with little lines for proportions and talk about it or what? I love this idea a lot. It’s harder than you make it look! There is something about that nude flesh tone that is making me tired. I bet you know what I mean? So the part I loved the most was after you added the darker red pigment in places.... no I wouldn’t stop there but from there on I’d do something a little different and keep the red theme going with the greens as the primary tones and use the yellow purples for ...ha ha..it’s FUN! Flesh tones have become just yucky and portrait painting is pretty much all I practice with. I need to revisit flesh tones probably and make better ones....oh....I just realized that! Hey thanks!!!

I have not tried oil painting before. Maybe it would be a good video idea??? I like how you edit too. Great job! Does the graphite mix in with the paint? It does with acrylic. It make the paint look dirty. Great tips bty!

For me it would be better to see the painting & reference photo rather than your pallet. Especially since your reference is in black-and-white. I love it though!
