That artwork was done by the Chiodo Brothers who were responsible for the Saturday morning TV Show, Large Marge from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Killer Clowns from Outer Space. The design is the Funko Wobbler in miniature form, the same as the Tic Tac Toe Game and the Sea- Monkeys included with some kits. Glad to hear you say you like the current artwork better than that. General rule of thumb I use with anything near pets is if it can be classed as Food safe, non toxic can mean it can still start to break down over time where as food safe generally means it wont or does it so slowly that you'll either catch it or it wont be enough to do harm to anything.
I had the grow toys too, I brought back a Lobster from Florida that would acctually 'break' out of an egg as it grew and if you want to save blister packaging from anything a warmed exact-o or scalpel blade will help break glue without tearing although older glues often wont need it as they break down.
