IGCSE First Language English - Paper 1 - THE ONLY VIDEO YOU NEED FOR May/June 2023!

First Language English Paper 1 (May/June 2023) is just around the corner - I hear, ya! Soooo, here's a bumper sized video looking at the three core questions:

1) Summary
2) Writer's Effect
3) Extended Writing

Here are my notes for the video in case you don't have time to watch the whole thing/want to revise quickly:

Core Question 1: Summary (1f)
Summary must be:
Written in 3rd person
Objective
Formal
Concise
Identify your point then number them (7-8 points should suffice) in the order in which you plan to include them in your summary.
Use a range of 7 to 8 ideas from the text.
Reword where appropriate, but scientific terms, technical terms, geographic locations and jargon are fine to keep.
To gain the writing marks you need:
A suitable style
Sophisticated discourse markers
Ambitious Vocab
More complex sentence structures to group multiple ideas together/
Question walkthrough
Text B will always be non-fiction
ANNOTATE - underline, highlight, and number
Spend between 30-35 minutes on this question.
Core Question 2: Writer’s Effect (2d)
Use the zoom-in technique - zoom in on a specific powerful word/phrase.
Explore the explicit meaning first before analysing the heck out of it - what the image means in its entirety.
After exploring explicit meaning, use this as a springboard to explore the implicit.
This is where you will get most of your marks.
Question walkthrough:
You MUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN THE BULLET POINTS.
Use topic sentences: “The overall effect of the language creates an image of…”
Use abstract nouns.
ANNOTATE - underline key phrases and pencil in a few notes.
Useful phrases to include:
‘The overall effect of the language creates an image of…’
‘Firstly/Secondly/Thirdly etc’
‘The writer describes’
‘Refers’
Core Question 3 - Extended Writing
Top tips:
Make sure you know all of the 8 text types and their features:
Journal - reflective, personal tone; emotive language
Magazine Article - depending on audience, might have catchy headline and more informal tone/register
Newspaper report - headlines, who what where when how
Formal Report -
Formal Letter
Informal letter
Interview
Speech
Don’t forget you’re being asked to assume a role. The register, vocabulary, tone, and style of writing should reflect the character you’ve been asked to assume.
Bullet points 1/2 are usually explicit/straightforward, Bullet point 3 requires inference/not so easy.
Do 3 paragraphs full of some text type - maybe start with a short introduction to establish the voice of the character.
Have a range of ideas across all 3 paragraphs.
Develop/infer across ALL 3 BULLET POINTS
Use a range of ARIPEFOREST techniques:
Alliteration
Repetition
Imperatives
Pronouns
Emotive language
Facts
Opinions
Rhetorical questions
Exaggeration
Statistics
Triplets
Questions you should ask yourself:
What’s the text type?
What’s the audience?
What’s the purpose?
Explore the character’s thoughts and feelings.
When annotating, note down the main ideas and your inference.
Spend 40-45 minutes on this question, and aim to cover 2 to 2 and a half pages.
