It’s a very realistic movie to me. I’ve met people who act like how his daughter did and have family members who are overweight. Brendan is going to get the Oscar. The score was incredible too.

I enjoyed this film for the acting and performances! The story is simple and short. Despite the makeup, to create a realism, which allowed Frazier to play this role, it worked well enough to tell the story. The emotional element of the narrative was rather strong and felt throughout the film. Brendan deserves the recognition he is receiving for his acting in this film.

Some interesting points but I have to disagree with most of them

Just wanna mention what I think is a pretty good and maybe overlooked performance from Frasier - The Passion of Darkly Noon. Interesting film and shows he does try to pick interesting roles, especially one quite low-key and from a British director. More than holds his own against both Ashley Judd and Viggo Mortensen.

I thought the movie was a masterpeice. I felt connected to all the characters in someway. The way he makes you feel for people onscreen is unparrell. I feel like you missed the point of the movie.

The body horror aspects were appropriate and not prejudiced or "freak-showy". They were indicative of Charlie's inner hell.I somehow found the movie visually beautiful as well.

Brendan Fraser was arresting in almost every single breath on screen. Unbelievable commitment.

The script in parts wreaked of elementary film student-level writing.Sady sink & missionary characters were frankly of very poor quality and needed rewrites and better performances.

You know it’s gonna be good when the trailer makes you tear up.

@5:44: You might like to check out *"The Menu" (2022)* with *Ray Fiennes* and *Anya-Taylor Joy.*
as a horror-comedy-satire, it's a different take on an Agatha Christie trope that would be familiar to someone like you and I.
You'll also find *Hong Chau* in it, though I honestly didn't like her here.

I'm glad Fraser is getting recognition for the performance but I'm also glad the movie isn't coming along in that conversation. It's one of the biggest disparities between material and performance I've seen in a while. The cast of this movie are the hardest working people in Hollywood considering I came out of this movie with a positive impression. Just barely.

Hearing your reviews are always spot on. I'm 38 lol and for me "Encino Man" was my favorite movie he did lol. I also thought the same thing on how you described Brendan's career. I'm and Aronofsky fan, still it's definitely not up there with his other film's. All the actors did a great job to carry the film. Great review.I

So I watched your review twice. We agree that the acting was exquisite all around. My favorite was Hong Chou's nurse. I loved the bite she brought to the character, but, in my opinion, it wasn't only Chou's doing. Samuel D. hunter had to write a Mormon-hating character who performs good deeds as unconsciously as breathing, and then Darren had to give that character space to breath. You hint at this a few times, but Darren is one of those guys who wants you to realize how brilliant he is while watching his films, yet The Whale sidesteps that burden. I forget why exactly I rated Mother a 9/10 instead of a 10/10, but it had something to do with Aronofsky thematically winking at the audience in the last 30 seconds in a way that undercut any chance of the film feeling substantial and genuine. He's usually like that, willing to sacrifice exploration of deeper themes for fanciful gimmicks, in my opinion, but, other than the fat suit (which you hated), there were no 'look at me' flourishes here. And really, the fat suit plays to Fraser's hand, not Aronofsky's.

Also, I think directors should always get credit for good acting in their movies, especially when every performance is this powerful. A mediocre director can sabotage a good actor by giving misguided direction. Hitchcock said it, 'actors are cattle'. And so it follows, a good director can enable an average actor to amazing heights.

Darren's subtle direction was masterful as far as I'm concerned.

One thing I think you missed: you didn't buy Fraser's character arc. I don't think his character had an arc. Everything about him is on display from the beginning: he's a broken person who revels in sacrificing himself for others. The character who is revealed, or has an arc, is his daughter. Up until the last scene all her actions can be viewed as cruel and self serving. What's revealed in the film's ending is her ability to accept his sacrifice. In other words, she's the heart of the film, not him. Or... Darren made the movie because he identifies with the smartass little girl, not the fatso father.
