The Black Pill Of Choice

Imagine if choices were actually not good, imagine if they were destructive...imagine if all the options really just meant no options at all...now just realise you don't need to imagine because you are already living that.

Sometimes there are too many Jordan Peterson videos available. You fall into analysis paralysis and never end up cleaning your room.

Choice isnt an illusion, the illusion is in fantisizing that some other Choice would have been better when you (inevitably) stumble upon adveristy. Every Choice has its advantages and drawbacks. The point is to find the Choice wich bares advantages that are valuable enough to you to suffer the drawbacks willingly.

KMart in Australia suffered a similar problem in the 2000's. It was failing. The new CEO then revamped the company including reducing the number of line items by ~70%, .... Less choice of increased quality equals more sales. At this price point, no one wants to see a wall of 10 toasters to choose from... Give them 2-3 and let them choose. This turned out the company around making it significantly more profitable.
This was a case study in my MBA classes.

With each passing year, Ted Kaczynski seems further vindicated. Our tools will be our downfall, because, as you suggested, our ability to create them far surpasses our ability to adapt to the changes they bring.

(Coming ironically from a software developer who's job it is to make more tools.)

Learned about this in highschool.

(Not from my teachers)

Very impressive how well this video sums it up so quickly, makes it very easy to understand.

I thought I was the only one thinking that too many options is a problem. My father told me when I was a kid that too many choices equals too many problems so just pick one and stick to it. Don't know if that was good advice to give a child but this video reminded me of him.

Great analogy! Fortunately I don't seem to suffer from this. You're essentially agonizing over not being able to see far into the future and, to me, that's a bit silly. I'm reminded of the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. In games I tend to favor heavy ugly slugger physical damage knowing it will leave me lacking in social skills and magic defense. But I really like stomping evil arsehats just because I can. I really liked Conan the Barbarian and Alexander the Great and strongly believe in the importance of physical force, otherwise all the reason, law, and rationality of civilization means nothing to the next troll to come along. I end up missing out on a lot of the game too because my MC is usually too dumb or awkward to gather much lore about what's going on in the more intrigue lore. He'll never know the meaning of it all, or even why his best friend betrayed him, or even be able to remember where he came from after losing his memories. But the bad guy will definitely remember the boot shaped hole in his rear end.

This reminds me of the articles that read like "Here are the 13.5 gagillion things you have to do before you die". Just makes you think you are a lesser person because surely someone, somewhere, has done it...

If you are aware of the reality in life, and just how low quality most humans are, it's a little bit interesting and quite often a little amusing to just watch the decline.
A good life is still available to the awake person.

Anyone who wants to looksmax will quickly abandon the soda and the cereal aisles! The alcohol aisle too, unless they're a special-occasion drinker. So the lesson there is to acknowledge our overabundance of choice, and begin reprioritizing the roots of our skill trees, from a blackpilled evolutionary standpoint.

All you have to do to understand this is to go clothes shopping with a female. They will look at everything in the store and then go back and purchase the first thing they tried on

I have the 5 hindrances (Buddhist monk) posted as my desktop, the last 2 related to overthinking your path i.e. your choices. The first of these is related to switching, throwing your mind out of the present, intellectually monkey branching. The second is about doubting your path, overanalysing it. Either of these will inhibit your path to knowing yourself better and lay confusion about how to proceed; within the grief process it is related to bargaining/ negotiation when you could just choose to finish grieving and chase joy.
Personally, don't be scared of imperfect choices, you aren't perfect so why should your choices be.
