Stop 🛑 the Varroa Destructor : PART 2 | Beekeeping 101

*_If you have bee colonies...you have mites._* It's not a question of "if" it is a question of "how many"
Stopping the Varroa Destructor is one of the most critical steps to building a strong honeybee colonies. There are many different opinions in the beekeeping community surrounding control of the pest "varroa destructor"
.

At @BohemiaBees we practice a series of IPM (integrated pest management) techniques to help combat these pests in our colonies. Maintaining strong colonies through diversified genetics, the use of screen bottom boards and brood breaks helps control the mite loads in our colonies. However , if you don't know what your mite loads are, you can't effectively control the volume.

This is why we recommend a good *test program* along with a *treatment plan* or *planto control*. In this video we are demonstrating how we treat our colonies using the oxalic acid ('OA') vaporizer technique. There are many ways to treat for mites but we have found a combination or rotation of treatments coupled with great IPM techniques are the best approach.

Ok I had to edit my comment, Jason. After watching a second time, I see you done 1/2 teaspoon of OA, not 1gram .. Lorob bees for the win !

I only have six so I can spend time to fight varroa. I use a heat treatment, raise the temperature in the box to 106 degrees to kill the mites in the brood, followed up two days later with an OA treatment. The heat treatment takes as much as 3 hours per hive to complete but it works well. Its like having a brood break with OA treatment.

1 Teaspoon = ~5.6 grams of OA. Your boxes look very nice! Did you ever do any updates on the hive that looked like it had a truck bed liner on it? Thanks for sharing! Congrats officially on 10k!
