19 years for a dam is like a car lasting 18 months.

The dam also probably got damaged by the 2013 flood when the dam was running at a whopping 230% 🤯

Yea, bit of a problem dam this one, I live upstream from it, lots of farmers depend on the dam for water security, for the massive amount of macadamias at bundy, and also for the small amount of sugar cane left. If this dam isn’t fix a lot of fresh water is going to be wasted, then they will be taken from upsteam dams such as waruma, and cania dam

Same as the Mosel dam in Iraq. Only problem is they've been building their replacement for decades and there's a LOT more people down stream. Like Bahgdad.

Get the money back from those who made it.

We had one near me that had a very similar issue back in the 50s and what they ended up doing is basically just draining the reservoir as far as they safely could and getting all the construction they could done before pretty much just shutting off the reservoir for about two weeks When they made the swap and did the final construction on the new dam because when they built it, they basically had a diversion pathway on it. That allowed them to keep water flow going until the new dam was all complete. Water was just shut off for long enough thatthey could plug the hole that they had at the bottom of the new dam as they built it then once that hole was plugged, they opened the old damn all the way and just removed everything they could from it that now sits about 30 feet under the surface of the water

Make the designers stand in front of it to hold it up.

Tuttle Creek Dam in Kansas. Built after a nasty flood in the late 50's and was a champ for 40 years. Then the Corps of Engineers did a little new figuring and were like "oops". See, there's this fault that runs right there. And it's not like a California fault, but it's a Kansas fault of the sort that could unleash a modest quake every whatever years, and the dam wasn't designed to survive that. And that puts 13, 000 people at risk of suddenly swimming in 5m of water.

So they fixed it. "$200 million firm-fixed-price contract for Seismic Stabilization Foundation Modification of Tuttle Creek Dam in Kansas so it can withstand a moderate to strong earthquake. As an interim measure, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is using a Dam Failure Warning System until the construction work is complete"

All better, now. For a few years folks were told to get gone fast if they heard the warning sirens. Which had to be distinguished from the tornado sirens which mean "stay put and get in your basement".

They need a third one at this point and call it Giva Dam

I just love civil engineers.
They keep falling under the radar.

The company that build should be on the hook for the new one.

The government should sue the designers, builders and concrete suppliers to recover the cost of the replacement

Pretty weird how all these modern day dams are failing decades after they’re built where other dams last well over 100 years

What if they named a van after Jean Claude Van Damme? It would be called the Jean Claude Van Damme dam. And what would a van that is used at that dam be called? The Jean Claude Van Damme dam van. And the guy who drives that van? The Jean Claude Van Damme dam, van man.

This dam seems to have been built with exactly the kind of competence, efficiency, and foresight the Australian government is renowned for.

Good old coffee money under the table 😂

At least they're able to use the old dam as a cofferdam.

Not so bad. They've done that in Switzerland too! The only difference is that the old dam was a bit older.
