I know this is 2 years old, but I figured the tip is still valid. If the wood was new, fresh from home depot or wherever it may still need to dry out more. 1x and 2x wood is still pretty wet. It's best to let it sit a few weeks before using it for projects.

Any wood canopy needs to have the interior painted with an epoxy paint to seal it. Use the same type of epoxy paint folks use to seal the inside of plywood aquariums (yes, people make aquariums out of plywood). Also, where you can, use plywood becausel it is more dimensionally stable and resists warping.
