Remove Damaged Headless Screws from Wood FAST

Показать описание
Leah demonstrates how to remove headless and damaged screws from wood using a hollow core drill bit. The drill bit allows extraction of damaged, headless screws and nail quickly. Leah also plugs the hole left from the extracted screw using a 3/8 inch wooden dowel. Once the wooden dowel is inserted and cut flush with the surface of the wood, Leah gives the repaired area a light sanding.

I'd been doing this kind of extraction very often when working on old wood boats. I just didn't know how wrong I had it. I used a small hole saw with the pilot bit removed, then started the cut by laying it down and letting the teeth slowly get started, coaxing a groove into the wood that finally got deep enough to guide the tool (usually). Yeah, I got the screws out, broken bronze screws by the dozens if not hundreds, but the result was always a mess, calling for epoxy repair work or occasionally a new piece.
Using a template to locate the bit never occurred to me - that alone would have saved me countless hours.
Leah deserves a medal for her public service to the nation.

A general comment -- I love how Leah does "cold opens" to her videos so you know exactly what's coming up and don't have to sit there for a long time waiting to find out if the video is going to address your question. These SJD videos are all just very well thought out -- and scripted. Not too much yacking and in many cases showing you what NOT to do (ex: not using a template) instead of just telling you.

This is a great tip, Leah! Here's another one: try putting some masking tape around the hole before you cut off the dowel. It helps to keep scratching to a minimum.

Two days ago a screw head snapped off while I was fixing some new floorboards. I didn't know how to get it out so I left it as it was and switching on to YT today was this 'how to' video! Amazing, as I hadn't searched for any explanations, it just turned up! Thanks, Leah,
I've got to get one of those bits.

I'm going to buy this and use it to drill out the wood around each deck screw in my deck boards so I can more easily just lift the boards off. The standing screws left behind? Reciprocating saw off! We are flipping the joists over to use the other side so leaving the screws in them won't matter.
Thank you so much for the concise demonstration, in particular the part where you show using a guide board to keep it from skirting around. I like how you specifically demonstrated what happens if you don't use a guide board. You are brilliant!

A slight modification of this technique solved the problem of removing snapped screws holding a fibreglass boat cap from hull
Drill right through and remove plug complete with screw. Neat and easily repaired. Many thanks for this and your other tips

Leah today in my plumbing foundations class I had a challenging day trying to install mechanical joint cast iron piping. I was trying to stay positive and put in the work but I am so new with tools I was having a mini break down trying to understand how to do the setup and get my hangers in at the proper places. I kept trying to remember your voice at the end of your videos telling me that 'I can do this'. It didn't solve my difficulties today but it definitely helped me calm down a little so thank you!!!

I have a 2-1/2"screw. The top 1" is not threaded. That's the part that broke off. So I have 1-1/2" of screw embedded in my wall (in a stud) that's countersunk 1" from the surface. As far as I can tell, this hollow core bit is the only thing that might make it possible for me to extract it. I just ordered one. I Google searched up and down the internet and I watched several videos, but yours is the only one that really addresses my problem. Thanks for the tip. It's much appreciated!

First time viewer & now I'm excited to go through your video collection. I started my handy woman love by working on car engines & I've been adding all kinds of house repairs under my belt. Wood work has always intimidating to me, but I think I'm ready to start learning. Thanks for the videos! ❤
