What Happened To The Aircraft: FedEx Express Flight 80, a cargo plane, crashed on 23 March 2009, while attempting to land at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The accident occurred during heavy rain and strong wind conditions caused by Typhoon Mindulle.
The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, touched down hard on the runway, causing the right main landing gear to collapse. This resulted in the plane veering off the runway and catching fire. The crew members and the two pilots on board were able to evacuate the aircraft before the fire engulfed it.
The crash investigation determined that the accident was primarily caused by the crew's failure to maintain the aircraft's proper glide path during the approach and landing. Additionally, the heavy rain and strong winds may have contributed to the accident by affecting the aircraft's handling characteristics.
Following the crash, safety improvements were implemented, including changes to the airport's procedures for landing during severe weather conditions and improvements in crew training and decision-making processes.
