For those internal filter compartments and if you use tank for a Betta then simply put a few holes in the pump out hose. It slows the flow down and moves the stagnant water around

Just got this tank myself. I was reading a study a while ago that said sponge was basically the best thing to grow bacteria. Bio rings were worse than bio balls, I'll probably just start with the cartirdge it came with while I cycle since that'll take so long and play with the aqua scape. I don't have any established media to use to seed the tank.

There should be a divider between the sponge and the pump that is a little shorter than the tank. This will force the water up through the entire sponge and over the divider into the pump chamber.
