Butterfly Elevation Drill

Being able to elevate our opponent from seated guard gives us the opportunity to create a dilemma between upper and lower body attacks. We start with our shoulders in front of our hips until the point we’re ready to initiate elevation, then we butt scoot towards our opponent. It’s important to keep our shoulders rounded and knees close to our chest as we go to elevate. We can use a variety of hand grips (bicep grips, underhooks, head & arm, 2 on 1 variations).

Lower Body Attacks: If we successfully get our opponent’s hips above ours we can enter into leg attacks (single leg x, cross ashi tatami, etc.)

Upper Body Attacks: If our opponent does a good job of sinking their hips low to defend being elevated, they expose their extended arms which gives us the ability to attack their upper body (shoulder crunch, etc.)
