There are two special cases for multiplying binomials:

(a + b) (a - b) = a^2 - b^2 Difference of Squares

and (a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 Perfect Square Trinomial

The big problem is that students try to distribute squares over addition and think that:

(a - b)^2 will give The difference of Squares = a^2 - b^2

This is NOT true!!!!!

(a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2 A perfect square TRINOMIAL.

When you square ANY binomial you ALWAYS get a trinomial with a positive term on the end and a double product in the middle.
