So both the Pacific and the Atlantic have dropped 100s of feet? Maybe we need to melt the Antarctic?

It's like my grandfather said to me when I was young, " if you don't work to earn it, and it's given to you, , you won't take care of it."

I have a friend that lives in Panama and he tells me. This is an absolute lie.

It's happening because the US core of engineers is no longer in charge in the region

The canal is not at sea level. The canal is above sea level through mountains. Every time they use a lock (water elevator) to raise ships between sea level to mountain level, it uses a lot of water from the canal. No rainfall means no water to raise ships. Pumping that much water back into the canal would require a nuclear power plant worth of power.

This is interesting. I sailed through there many times in the early 70's. Did most of my Steering ticket going through it! Wee Ian (67) Scotland.

The solution to guaranteed future use is the installation of a cross pumping between each set of adjacent locks. This would allow the reuse of water over and over. Gravity would take care of half the pumping. When the water in adjacent locks is at the same level, pumps would have to raise one lock to its maximum height, by lowering the other, by cross pumping the water. This would enormously reduce the water needed from Gatun Lake. The Canal could work at it's maximun capacity regardless of the drought now endangering it's present use.

Excuse me, but the. Canal is fed by both the Atlantic on one end, and the Pacific on the other. , so how can the canal possibly dry up.

Please help my ignorance, why have they not installed pumps within each lock to the area just above each lock? Will the profits from the shipping not cover the build and o&m costs?

I'm thinking we as a human race we should get the sharpest minds of the world and give them the task of coming up with solution to this issue as canal issues will affect everyone on the planet. But that's just my thought on it.Hope others will come up with thoughts and discussions that will come up with a viable solution. Thanks foe letting me share b safe everybody

Why can they not install intake valves to pump the water from the locks back up into the lakes rather than allowing the water to exit into the sea? Basically, recycle the fresh water from the lock sections and lighten the strain on the water level of the lakes. If high water levels come back due to rain, resort to the original way and allow the water to go out into the sea.
