For those who are confused, the small ones are tugboats and they have job to maneuver the bigger ship properly so they can navigate in straight manner inside the panama canal. For those who are unaware, they should watch videos of how ships move through panama canal, they are pretty interesting and engineering marvel.

My uncle's main career (after military, and Merchant Marine) involved piloting ships through the Canal system. My aunt was from Costa Rica, and my cousins were both born in Panama, living in (what was then) the Canal Zone. My uncle was born in Toronto, but when he retired, he relocated to Florida, vowing never to live anyplace farther north :D. He had opposed giving it back to Panama, in the 1970s. But were he still alive, I think he'd be impressed by the more recent modifications/ improvements to the system.

The reason why the green ship is difficult to control is because the engine has been turned off, when a ship enters the lock gate, the ship is not allowed to turn on the engine and will be guided instead

ok but no if you're actually confused, the big ship had to turn off their engine in order to enter the canal, but they also can't put down their anchor, so they use smaller boats to stop the ship from getting brought away by the wave, while fixing and holding it's position from straying or hitting the land and other docks.
