Rich chicks used to rub a whitening agent onto their faces made from lead acetate. A particularly famous aficionado of its use was Elizabeth Tudor. It's speculated that her noted depression, mood swings and flashes of anger in her later life were a result of lead poisoning.

My ex gf was constantly being given ipecac as a child because she had a habit of locating and ingesting nightshade berries.

Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, AND tobacco are ALL nightshades too.

Nightshade is also in the US like that red one is called bitter sweet nightshade and the poison is mainly in the leaves, stem, and unripe berries. This place grows everywhere where I live

Many nightshade varieties in Australia. Including that one with the red berries. They make an interesting photography subject in low light.

Nightshade has a "sister" plant that grows around the world and looks exactly the same called Belladonna. It is still used in homeopathic eyedrops for allergies as it is a wonderful natural numbing agent and antispasmodic. It can also be deadly if you consume an adequate amount. On the other hand, consuming just the right amount is very helpful in many ways. It can help with stomach pain, cramping of any sort, stops vomiting in its tracks, is a wonderful sleep aid, can be used in elixirs to help with coughing and breathing problems such as asthma attacks and can even be used to treat panic disorders. One more little tidbit of information... The potato is a member of the same family. Do not, EVER, eat the flowers of a potato plant unless you want to spend hours on the toilet and even longer in the hospital. The flowers are extremely toxic. If you're having a problem with falling asleep, try eating a baked potato or some mashed spuds with your dinner.

The poison is in the dose. There are absolutely medicinal uses for these plants.

We look back and cringe at the dangerous stuff people used to do in the name of beauty.... Have you seen the beauty industry these days?! We haven't come that far.

The reason it was a "beauty trend" is because, during sexual arousal the eyes' pupils dilate. So, the dilation of the pupils was supposed to make others think of arousal, whether they knew why or not. In general, only women used these. Nightshade was used for centuries for this reason. Queen Elizabeth I used these drops. It was rare, however, protracted use of these drops could lead to blindness.

I get harrassed by my peers for how my eyes look. They naturally look like i put nightshade on them. Now, I am obsessed with the victorians. I think i found my calling.

I heard of this with belladonna never heard of nightshade

It's funny because my pupils are constantly dilated, to the point where they don't have to dilate my pupils at the eye doctor. Wish this was still a fashion trend.

America has nightshade too. 1 berry can kill a child. However once fully ripe the berries are harmless and by eaten and made into preserves.

It just goes to show you that beauty standards are still kind of weird even to this day but at least we're not trying to kill ourselves I hope. We still live in an age where plastic surgery is a major subject so just keep that in mind
