3 Incorrect Reasons to Ride a Motorcycle

Why should you buy a motorbike? Your reasons to ride might be as philosophical as "freedom" or as practical as getting on the ferry first. I've heard worse. But it's hard to be gracious with 3 reasons that are fallacious.

Stopped for a coffee over the weekend and a guy about twice my age started chatting to me. Spent about an hour with him talking circuit racing, road racing different bikes, commuting to work and more. Beat sitting there on my own staring at my phone, that’s for sure 👍🏼

The girls part is comedy/tragedy. It worked for me in high school, but now all I get are 25-65 year old men hitting on my Africa Twin.

That ending is actually a good reason TO get a bike, you might not get the chicks but you’ll meet lots of friendly folk that want to chat about bikes!

For about 3 years my wife and I were a one bike, one car household. She doesn't ride and was working full time so she had the car pretty much every day. I rode everywhere, rain, hail or shine, went to work, the gym and even did my groceries on the bike. It was a great money saver for us.

My dog is a much better chick magnet than my motorcycle. I've had maybe two women come up to me on my motorcycle. With my dog, it's literally been hundreds, more so when he was a puppy.

I'm surprised about the saving money part - one of the first things I felt while riding compared to driving a car was less worry about paying for gas or insurance, I go places I would never go in the car because I'd weigh up the cost of a tank of fuel but my bike does 200 miles on $13 so the cost is pretty much removed from the equation when travelling for me. I have to learn how to properly maintain my bike so it doesn't decay too badly sure but that's also a plus - teaching me personal responsibility.

When you have a bike, other bikers just come up and talk to you. It's a great way to just meet and greet with people that like the same thing.

Last summer, I had what was actually a really delightful conversation in a grocery store parking lot, with a neat little old dude who looked approximately 112 years old. He asked me if my Oldwing was a 650, and was quite impressed by its 1100 cc’s. “I’ll bet it’ll touch 100 eh!” “It certainly will, ” I told him. Then he talked about riding across Spain, and parts of Europe after WW2 on a bike who’s brand he couldn’t recall. Sometimes it’s good to give a few minutes of your life to an old timer; they gave up a lot so I can enjoy this quality of life, and they have some really great stories to share.

I can confirm the older people that like to talk. That's how it should be though. Meet people, hear stories and enjoy it all. If it wasn't for the bike you wouldn't have met that person. Everybody be nicer to each other.
