Designing the World of Film: Crash Course Film Production with Lily Gladstone #9

Literally, ‘mise-en-scene’ means “placing on stage.” But in film, mise-en-scene encompasses everything the camera is capturing. The artists and crafts-people who work in Production Design, Wardrobe, and Hair and Makeup are responsible for setting the stage of a film and making sure the characters fit on that stage. In this episode of Crash Course Film Production, Lily Gladstone talks us through the roles involved in designing the world of a film.

I can't tell if it's JUST that I'm super interested in this topic, or if it truly just flows so so much better than some other CC series. Probably a little bit of both. But I really love the pacing, inclusion of examples and references and the smoothness of the speaking/presentation of information. Really really well done.

Somehow never made the connection between Lily Gladstone on Crash Course and Lily Gladstone in Certain Women. Go her!

I friggin love this series! I have no interest whatsoever in actually being involved in making films, but it's absolutely fascinating to learn all the details of how the films I enjoy consuming get made!

Lily makes me release a massive dose of dopamine.
Her voice (tho lower-pitched), timing and the editing reminds me of Emily on The Brain Scoop which i love.
Cheers everyone on CC.

That costume designer in the thumbnail is a really good Edna Mode cosplayer. Good for her.

Biggest thing that jumped - Set Decorator doesn't equal a Scenic Designer - Production Designer > Art Director > Scenic Designer. The Production Designer utilizes their Art Directors to implement construction drawings from the Draftspeople (Set Designers / Scenic Designers). The Set Decorator is an entirely different department within the Art Department. They employ Buyers / Leadmen to shop/coordinate the furnishings for a set.

Another fantastic example of naturalistic film making is Kimberly Levin's "Runoff". It's a beautiful film and it feels so lived in.

If you watch "While You Were Sleeping" with the sound off and focus on clothes and interior design, you can predict who ends up with the girl.

I thought sure you were going to mention continuity there with "Last looks."
